Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Released On Steam For Linux

"It has a "Very Positive" rating on Steam, so it looks like it's a good hit!" -> by that logic practically every single game on Steam is a good hit. Seriously, the game have to be *broken* for it to accumulate a "mostly negative" rating.

But the actual reviews are good for this game, so in this case we indeed got a winner! :)

Actually I find the Steam reviews overall rating very valuable, but this arguments has been done to death on another article.

I've found the user ratings to be pretty useful myself as long as you remember the target audience of the game. For instance, if you hate Hidden Object games a rating of Overwhelmingly Positive probably means the game will not be very fun for you, but if you love Hidden Object games, then Very Positive or higher probably means you'll really like the game.

An arcade twin stick shooter ported by Aspyr!? Wow, sure thing I will buy it. But I need my salary first :)

I gave it a quick try (it's only a 85.5MB download) and it looks pretty good. I'm looking forward to playing with some of my competitive family members over the holidays.

But I did come across two quirks.

• I would have liked a bit more antialiasing but there are currently no graphical options in-game ([seems it'll be added in a future update](http://steamcommunity.com/app/310790/discussions/0/617320628008966116/#c617320628009537496)) and attempting to force it results in a black screen.


• Navigating the menus with a keyboard, the escape key nor any other appear to be mapped to back.

Not bad. I'll probably pick this one up soon. Between this, Fotonica and Tales of Maj'Eyal, I will probably be set for the remainder of this year.

This we agree with, but that goes for real reviews too. They have to be seen from that context. For example, I hate racing simulators. So, not even a simulator with a metascore of 95 would be of interest to me.

but if you love Hidden Object games, then Very Positive or higher probably means you'll really like the game.

And this is where we disagree.
If you take a few minutes and have a look at some random games on Steam, you will find that an overwhelming majority of them are summarised as "very positive" or better. "Overwhelming" to such an extent that it loses all value as a guideline, unless you happen to be of the opinion that 9/10 released today are very good, and in that case one does not need any reviews anyway.

I mean, what I describe here is not just personal opinion, it's based on observation. I urge those of you who don't believe what I am saying here to do the following:

1. Open your Steam client and find some games in your library you'd rate as mediocre at best, head to their store page and check their user rating summary. Just do it.

2. Then, go to a metascore site (metacritic or gamerankings) and look up the title in question.

Then finally get yourself a cup of coffee, sit back and reflect for a while on your observations. :)
