The Talos Priniciple Public Test Released

After revealing the release date for The Talos Principle just a couple of days ago, Croteam has now released a public test on Steam. The public test is of course free and contains four complete levels.

This sounds like a great way for us to check if our gaming rigs are up to the task before putting down our hard earned money for the full game. It also enables the developer to get valuable feedback and is of course a good way to promote their upcoming game before the release next month.

In my previous article about the game I failed to mention that there's an additional 5% off the price for pre-ordering if you already own either Antichamber, The Swapper or Serious Sam 3: BFE on Steam:

About the Public Test

The Public Test for The Talos Principle consists of four increasingly difficult complete puzzle levels, where players will be able to test the range of puzzle mechanics, as well as run a benchmarking AI bot for their personal PC.

The Public Test is meant to serve as additional stress and compatibility testing before The Talos Principle launches later this year and is now available on Steam for a limited time prior to the game's release.

Very fun. Finished it already. Didn't find a single bug/problem. Now I am looking forward to this even more. Similar style to play as Portal.

Downloading now! I wish more developers did things like this. It gives us a chance to find bugs and report them as well as see if it something we want to purchase.

I'm on my lunch break so I don't have time to really test her out yet, but it loaded up just fine, let me select my full 5760x1080 resolution and away it went. One thing I noticed that I REALLY like is that it has graphics options FOR DAYS! I don't know if I have ever seen so many graphic options in a game before! wow! So far looking good, can't wait to get off work and dig in.

How was the performance for you?

It's odd, but something is making me feel like it's sluggish.

Edit > I turned on the FPS counter and WOW LOW FPS.

It had my CPU set to ULTRA and everything else set to HIGH in the performance section. Heh their auto detect fails.

Same thing here, had consistantly below 30 fps with a few spikes, GPU got pretty hot then it crashed.

No visual issues though and game was fun :). Completed 2/3 puzzles before it crashed. Depending on game length and how good the story looks I'll consider getting this one, looks pretty promising so far

I got stops for 1-5 seconds, during the game and even once in a menue.
Anybody else experienced that?

I got some pretty extreme frame rate drops during transitions and a few big ones while walking. Other than that the game was mostly between 40-50 fps, which was much better than I'd expected on my 2 year old laptop with a GeForce GT 630M.

I also really enjoyed the puzzles and had a neat conversation with the "developer console" AI. I collected 2 stars but I suspect there are at least a couple more hidden away somewhere.

I know my card isn't the best (750ti) but should be running a lot better than it is right now. The game looks absolutely great though and I've enjoyed what i've played so far. Really think it's a great idea that they do stuff like this before release rather than having a flood of comments come in about bugs on release.

Also, gamepad worked absolutely great out of the box, shows the correct button names in game and everything, which I really like :)

Well color me intrigued! It seems they have some more optimization to do as it does stutter quite often and I was running it with the performance governor. It looks pretty darn good too, not "crysis good" but one of the better looking Linux games thus far IMO. Surprising they went with OpenGL2.1 though. Still, I want more after those few puzzles that is for sure!

I just stumbled upon a free sigils mini game from them to help warm you up ;) I see a few people from here have played it that are in my friends list.

It auto detect ultra for my Cpu, Gpu and Gpu ram.
I did have to customise the "GPU Speed" section a little, just like in Serious Sam 3.
Turned off Antialiasing, Ambient occlusion, shadow antialiasing, reflections, and made sure Mpix is same as screen resolution.

After that smooth 60fps with vsync. According to in-game benchmark.

In any case I’m playing with ondemand and it’s working fine. (I have tweaked a couple settings but in another game I measured the effect and it only changed the FPS very slightly.)

For whatever reason (I can't remember to ever have touched it), it was set to powersave, and ondemand is not even in the list of available governors. I set it to performance, the only other option, and in a short try I did not get the pauses.

But to be honest, I cannot understand that. Even with all 4 cores set to minimal frequency, the game should be able to at least play some sound. And it even happened in the menues!

I had forgotten about it but I actually also turned down the mouse sensitivity after playing through the first puzzle and thinking the camera felt too jumpy. That would explain why I went from ~30-40 fps to ~40-50 fps. Haven't tried mouse smoothing yet though.

Interestingly, though the scores are quite close, Mesa has the edge on fglrx: higher min, higher average, though lower max, fps. I know that's not exactly detailed data (e.g I don't have timings for every frame from the benchmark), but it's encouraging nonetheless.

When you run the benchmark, the game writes interesting stuff into its log file, like best 10% fps, worst 10% or something along these lines...

Ran pretty good for me. Low fps at first but after a minute or so it felt pretty good performance wise. Didn't have a fps counter but it felt like 30 to 60 with everything on ulta on a machine with an i7 3770, gtx 660, 16 gigs of ram on arch stable. Pretty much the same performance I have with serious Sam 3
