Update #1 I spoke over email with my personal contact at Aspyr Media, and they confirmed they are not doing the port:
QuoteWhile Aspyr is working on a multitude of Linux titles right now, BioShock Infinite is not one of them. That said, this is exciting news and we are looking forward to a great title coming to a great platform.

We have now reached out to our contacts at 2K.

Update #2 2K have now confirmed it on their Twitter and it will be released "early 2015".

Good news, Linux gamers: BioShock Infinite is coming to Linux in early 2015. More details coming after the New Year. pic.twitter.com/kj4QXq1IYx

Thanks to everyone who sent the confirmation in!

I love waking up to this sort of news. This isn't confirmed yet, but thanks to SteamDB we have word that BioShock Infinite looks highly likely that it will see a Linux release.

Pretty exciting, as it's yet another game I've never even touched for not having a Linux version. The Steam reviews are "Overwhelingly Positive", so that's a damn good sign to me.

On SteamDB the "depot" page now has a "Linux Binaries" section, and on the history it states this:
QuoteChanged Depots
214940/config/oslist: linux
214940/name: Linux Binaries

Considering the original publisher is 2K who don't mind Linux ports, and the Mac port was done by Aspyr Media it certaintly seems likely we will see a Linux port soon!

About the game
Indebted to the wrong people, with his life on the line, veteran of the U.S. Cavalry and now hired gun, Booker DeWitt has only one opportunity to wipe his slate clean. He must rescue Elizabeth, a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood and locked up in the flying city of Columbia. Forced to trust one another, Booker and Elizabeth form a powerful bond during their daring escape. Together, they learn to harness an expanding arsenal of weapons and abilities, as they fight on zeppelins in the clouds, along high-speed Sky-Lines, and down in the streets of Columbia, all while surviving the threats of the air-city and uncovering its dark secret. Yeah, I clicked install yesterday and after about 20 seconds I stopped the install because clearly nothing was going to happen. If I'm wrong on that though and someone has somehow managed to get it working on Linux a few months before the release date, then please let me know.

Still wondering who's doing the port - I mean, why should Feral do the port if they never ported Infinite to the Mac but Aspyr did?

I guess it's one of these options:
-Your contact at Aspyr tries to fool us :P
-The game will be "eONed"
-Some third party is porting the game, e.g. icculus

I really doubt it's Feral...

Feral did port the first two games, so although it's strange to give the Linux port to them when it means duplicating work done for the Mac port by Aspyr it's not infeasible. It could be that Aspyr are just too busy, they've already said that they are porting multiple games to Linux right now, that's going to keep their fledgling 'Linux' team occupied.

Perhaps 2K have contracted it so that another company get Aspyr's port as a starting point? Perhaps someone else is doing it? Maybe 2K are even doing it in-house?

The clues given by Feral about their next linux game are ambiguous. They seem to apply more strongly to Total War (meh), but it's possible to make a reasonable case for Bioshock Infinite. We know both games have appeared on SteamDB for linux, and Feral did the TW port for Mac, so realistically Feral aren't the ones doing Bioshock - unless Feral are doing both and only put one on the radar?

The thing that really worries me is that linux and windows depots are shared apart from the executables, whereas the Mac port had separate depots altogether. Both Feral and Aspyr use completely separate depots because for one you can optimize your assets into a format that's better suited for the target platform and for two they can't always release patches on all platforms at once, since they're not working on the original windows build and binaries might not be the only thing that were changed in a patch.

So there's only really two scenarios in which shared linux/windows assets depots would make sense:

1: It's an eON wrapped port where they only really need to wrap the original executables and assets up

2: It's a native port done by the same team that's maintaining the windows code at this point, i.e. one base that builds on both windows and linux, so they don't need to worry about patches getting out of sync.

While the second possibility would be really awesome, it's just wishful thinking at this point and not awfully likely, since Irrational Games has been dissolved. But then again 2k have very recently founded a new studio which seems to be the intended successor to Irrational, so it's not completely out of the question that said studio is also intended to produce cross platform titles rather than windows titles that need porting by external contractors and thus as a proof of concept is porting Irrational's final game.

Quoting: KhudsaA question. If you wait until the game is released for Linux, but you want a boxed copy. What happens if you buy a boxed version, activates it under Linux and play it under Linux? It counts as a Linux sale and the money goes to the guys who ported the game?

Thanks.
It will note it's a boxed copy (steam has depots and info for boxed copies), and pay the appropriate people. If you want the Linux sale, buy it on Linux and play it on Linux/

Thanks! So no boxed versions if you want to contribute to Linux ports then! Or meanwhile the Linux versión doesn't come within the box, I suppose.

Thanks!

Quoting: BeamboomNothing is lost by playing Infinite first. It's two different worlds.
Yes, but they're related worlds. You'll understand a few things better if you've played the first game, and I don't think the ending would have the same impact without having played the original. For sure you should play the first game before the 2 Burial at Sea DLCs if possible. Hopefully that Feral Twitter tease means the wait won't be too long.

I totally agree that this current steamdb status is very strange. There have not been any Linux games that I've seen so far that simply share the Windows Depots, not even Witcher 2 and Stronghold 3 which are VP ports with eON. Anyway, awesome news that it's coming to Linux, and I guess we'll see in time if it's a true native port. Other games from 2K have all been native though.

Wow this is awesome! One of my favourite games ever! Too bad I've already finished it on Windows...

But I'll definitely play it again when it comes out for Linux.
