Chaos Reborn is the brand new game from Julian Gollop, the designer of the original, award-winning XCOM (A game I am a massive fanboy of).
I have been eager to try out Chaos Reborn, and although it's in early access, it is already amazingly playable.
As usual with strategy games, I suck. It revolves around you playing as a single wizard who uses cards to spawn spells and creatures. It requires a fair bit of thinking to actually get very far, and everyone seems really good already when playing online, damn.
The good thing is they have already added in a single-player vs AI mode to practice.
About the game
From Julian Gollop, the designer of the original, award-winning XCOM game comes Chaos Reborn - a fast paced, turn-based wizard combat game with an RPG twist. Between 2 and 4 players can challenge each other to magical duels in a variety of arenas using a spell deck of interesting spells and creatures - including the Gooey Blob, Shadow Wood, and more. Planned features include extensive single-player and co-op RPG elements where players can explore the Realms of Chaos fighting Wizard Lords and Kings while collecting artifacts and spells along the way. These Realms can either be procedurally generated or designed by player Wizard Kings. Players will be able to trade items, join Orders (guilds) and ascend social ranks, perhaps to become one of the gods. We plan to add extensive offline modes as well, where you can set up battles with AI wizards, different arenas and custom rule sets.
Check out Chaos Reborn on Steam now.

Somehow reminds me of Karen Millers fantasy novels. Don't know why...... :P
I might get this when it is out of EA.

Liam, if you feel overmatched in multiplayer for this game, you have to play a MP game of Dominions 4 to feel completely humbled and humiliated . It remains the very best TBS I have ever played; my previous favorite was HOMM3. Dominions 4 (and DOM 3, for that matter) makes HOMM3 look like checkers, compared to Dominions 4's chess or Go.
The game has a 45 degree learning curve, and, once you've figured out the best way to play a nation, there are 25 or so other nations which are as different from the one you've learned as they are from each other. The AI can be beat, once you have a hundred hours of gameplay under your belt. Playing MP (usually by email) lifts the game about seven stories into a completely absorbing, and, yes, humilating experience, which you will probably love.
Dominions (1, 2, 3 and 4) are notorious for the barely-adequate graphics, and praised to the skies for the incredible, Marianas Trench-like depth of gameplay. The developers have day jobs, and gameplay has taken precedence over graphics (as it should). The official forums are on http:www.desura.com, and it's also on Steam. It's also currently on sale on Steam.
Hmmm. Maybe I should do a review here; I started playing DOM3 in 2010, and one big reason was its cross-platform release. Although it's developed on Linux :), it's available for Windows and OSX as well.

I am a massive fan of Heroes of Might and Magic 3. My favourite game of all time, in fact. Judging from the numerous images and around 30 minutes of gameplay that I have watched, this game just seems to be the battle mode that Heroes of Might and Magic 3 has. No world map to explore, which is a huge part missing considering what type of game this is. Age of Wonders 3 and Endless Legend are much, much closer to what I seek.
