Aspyr Media have done it again! Civilization: Beyond Earth is now officially available for Linux, and we have keys to throw through the screen.
It's fantastic that it was ported as quickly as this, and the communication in public from Aspyr Media has been fantastic. Other bigger developers could learn a thing or two from Aspyr.
About the game
Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth is a new science-fiction-themed entry into the award-winning Civilization series. Set in the future, global events have destabilized the world leading to a collapse of modern society, a new world order and an uncertain future for humanity. As the human race struggles to recover, the re-developed nations focus their resources on deep space travel to chart a new beginning for mankind.
As part of an expedition sent to find a home beyond Earth, you will write the next chapter for humanity as you lead your people into a new frontier and create a new civilization in space. Explore and colonize an alien planet, research new technologies, amass mighty armies, build incredible Wonders and shape the face of your new world. As you embark on your journey you must make critical decisions. From your choice of sponsor and the make-up of your colony, to the ultimate path you choose for your civilization, every decision opens up new possibilities.

How is it determined which version of OpenGL is used if you don't mind me asking?

Well, as the game uses an updated version of the Civilization V engine, I'd say that it uses the same OpenGL version 3.3. That's just a supposition but definitely not older and I doubt it uses OpenGL 4.0 (AFAIK, Metro Redux is the first and only game to use OpenGL 4).

Aspyr is awesome, bringing best of the breed gaming to Linux.. and GOL is definetely the #1 source on linux gaming - keep up the good work!!

Depends on the call within the code and how it relates to the DX codebase we are working from.

I really love Gamingonlinux. Follow since some months and the articles and comments from the editors and community have always been up-to-date, informative and helpful.
Aspyr has become my favourite porting company, mainly because of BL2. Their community work is awesome and Aspyr-Blair especially does a great job in the steam forum and here.
I would not appreciate the free key, without being ungratefull. Once I tried a free weekend and found out that CiV is just too complicated, and I don't have the time to watch hour long youtube tutorials (same so with Empire:Total War, hope feral games can be mentioned). Somehow miss the good old days with linear "realtime" games Age of Empires III and Stronghold.

Well the reviews aren't too kind on this game, but since it was ported and its classes as a triple A. I've bought it.

Hello. Wow, another great game for Linux. All Civ games are great but this is a completely new and interesting approach.
I love Aspyr because they port famous games to Linux and is thus an example for other companies. I especially love them for Civ5 :P...
And I love GamingOnLinux because it is my main and best source of news about Linux games. This is the place where I found out that many games that I like were ported and I quickly start saving money to buy them.
I hope to see more and more games like this ported to Linux.
