The platformer from developer Turtle Cream has some very interesting mechanics and a beautiful soundtrack and is a welcome addition to our platform for fans of the genre. It has been available for Linux since 24th November according to the official announcement on Steam, but we would have missed it had it not been for a tip from a reader.

What's interesting about 6180 the Moon is that it wraps around the top and bottom edges, so when you make a jump you have to take into account where you'll land if you leave the screen and enter it from the other side. You will also gain speed to a certain extent when you fall, so that's something to take into consideration as well. There's certainly an aspect of precision platforming to the game, but in some levels you'll have more luck by progressing slowly and thinking through your moves in advance. As you move through the different areas, represented by planets in the Solar System, more elements are added to the game, like blocks that make you bounce off them and gain speed before they crumble, alternating and moving platforms and an item that lets you stop in mid-air once.

Official About
6180 the moon is a platformer game with a unique mechanic. It offers a fresh, unseen game play style by connecting the top and bottom of the screen. This allows in a mechanic with delightfully long jumps and no fear of "slipping" to death.

In addition to the unique gameplay, 6180 the moon delivers a unique storyline. The Sun has gone. The Moon sets off on a journey to find the Sun. Along the journey will be hazardous courses and deep realizations.

So far the Linux version is only available on Steam. Buying from Humble Bundle gives you a Steam key too, and hopefully a DRM free version with time. There's also a version with a very nice soundtrack available, both on Humble Bundle and on Steam.

Yeah, me too. :) Reminds me a bit of VVVVVV with its endless vertical tunnels.

I've also gotten confirmation from the developer now that DRM free versions will be uploaded to Humble Bundle and Desura soon.

I found a steam key for this waiting for me yesterday on Indie Royale, from when it was in a bundle last year, I'd forgotten I had this one.
