StarMade, A Space Crafting Game Now In Steam Early Access, Minecraft In Space

If you've been a regular at Gaming on Linux you may have heard about this one before. As GOL covered it before, but this was last year.

To sum the game up, it's Minecraft in space with a dash of Privateer and Wing Commander. Building ships (and bases) block by block. You can use different blocks including weapon components and engine modules. The crafting tool is extremely powerful, you can create a tiny fighter, or a huge Capitol ship. In the trailer someone had built a replica of the USS enterprise! Pretty sweet stuff.

StarMade was recently released as an early access title on Steam. The best part? The demo is actually the full game free 2 play game, so you can fly around the universe and see if you dig it enough to warrant a purchase for a one time purchase premium account. You can also download it from the games webpage if you don't have a good relationship with Steam.

I downloaded the alpha build on their website and got literally 5 fps from the game :D
Aside from that, the game is interesting.... I guess :)

Huh? What kind of machine do you have? I have a lot higher fps on my 6+ year old maschine with an 8800GTX.

You can bet! It's amazing what they have done with the last updates. You have now planets in dodecaeder shape instead of discworlds. Pirates, Spider-Bots(?)wormholes, black holes, warpgates, 120+ Weaponcombos, programmable ShipAI, Starmap, infinity space with over 9 billion(?) galaxies. Faction-PVP and lots more.

But it is IMHO also a bit complex, which could be a bit frustrating at the beginning to get into it and things working. Most stuff is meanwhile covered by the new Tutorial in the beginning.

Just give it a try :D

O.o I really want to play it now!
I have a HD 7730 with 4GB of RAM and a very old CPU.... I really need to cut off that bottleneck sometime.
Still, 5 fps is definitely surprising.

On my setting Nvidia 8800 GTX/1GB, Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (3Ghz) and 8GB Ram I get 60 FPS, only close to bigger planets (r200+) the frame rate drops.

What Java version do you have installed? Should be 64Bit only on a Linux 64Bit System. It seems that Java 32Bit is causing problems, like low frame rates.

I use OpenJDK 7 probably 64 bits.... through I can't really tell if it is or not.

I played it a couple of months ago. The game is pretty awesome. I had some complaints though.

* There is jumping between sectors (The sectors are pretty small) so combat is annoying and glitchy.
* The planets are huge, generating one and sending across the network has resulted in lag for more than 3min at a time.
* While you could harvest material, buying from the shop crafting it into something slightly better and selling it back was massively lucrative. People would just empty shops of money and parts.

I am hoping the dev cleans up some of these issues before launch.
