New Rendering Engine
This update hauls the new graphical engine "Antartica". The highlight of this new engine is the improved light and shadow rendering which makes STK 0.8.2 looks much better than previous versions. It is worth noting that this new engine requires OpenGL 3.1, and although the graphical settings can be changed to achieve playable FPS, the minimum GPU supported is HD 3000.

Improved Maps
The old "Island" and "Jungle" maps have been replaced with improved "Gran Paradiso Island" and "Cocoa Temple" maps respectively. These maps are gorgeous, and are hopefully an example of the quality of maps added in the future.

Prerequisites for Online Multiplayer
Online accounts have been added to prepare for online multiplayer. Although online multiplayer isn't ready yet, the STK team did state that it "will be our main focus once the release is done". Your account will also allow you to connect achievements and stay in touch with your friends.

Updated Physics, Grand Prix Editor
The new version includes many more new features - we still need to assemble the full list. But it includes different kart physics, based on this year's GSoC work, random Grand Prix, a Grand Prix editor and more.

How To Play
You'll have to build the game from source because this is a beta release. Alternatively, you can download pre-built binaries for Windows and Mac.

That looks like a vast improvement! Cannot wait for this update to come out of beta so that I can give it a go.

Because Windows and Mac users are too scared to use git...

Anyway, if any Arch users wants to try it out they can simplify it with this:

I already loved supertuxkart back in the ppc linux/morphos times.
can't wait that this brilliant looking 0.8.2 will hit gentoo portage :}
edit:
hmm, a tarball for the beta source would be nice. not sure if I want to roll a live ebuild.

Most Windows and Mac users don't generally have compilers installed on their system, and binaries are easily portable on those systems due to there not being a bunch of distros that put libraries in different places.

Will it be available on Steam? ;)

Many Linux distributions also unfortunately do not supply them by default, as is evident by the guide linked to in the article.

Binaries are not that hard to ship and make portable on Linux either. Still, I would agree that for a beta release the effort involved is really not needed.

Oh and for people who want to unlock the new tracks without playing the story mode, please see http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=6043

Steam, maybe later, we'll first have to get the stable 0.8.2 out. Thanks for the comments so far!

A Steam release would be awesome! With this latest Beta the game is already at a really good level and no doubt it would get greenlit by a tonne of Linux users.

As I said on OMGUbuntu,

Can we get a Steam release? PPA & Tar.gz installations are so tiresome,

Plus SuperTux devs would get better ideas of Gamer Linux Metrics, Achievements, Locales, Free Steam Forums, Community Chat, Screenshots, and other elements that encourage Game Community Building.

How about going Steam now (Greenlight), say you're Early Access and take a few bucks for further development?

Guys, I love what you do, you could even put a link in the description that this is free and open source elsewhere, but many people would pay for it I guess.

Of course you'd have to be really open with everything but still would get a lot of complaints of people who paid, unable to read they can get it for free elsewhere...
