The Original Strife: Veteran Edition, The Original FPS & RPG Hybrid On Steam For Linux, We Have Keys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BxbAP6bLZo
The Original Strife: Veteran Edition is apparently the original hybrid of FPS and RPG games. It has been revamped, and placed onto Steam. The engine is even open source and included with the game.
We spoke to one of the developers who cleared this up about the engine:
The engine used is actually open source and based on "Chocolate Strife", Night Dive Studios actually employed the original Chocolate Strife developers to do it, and keep it open. You have to love that!
About the game
The Original Strife is back!
Hailed as the original FPS-RPG game that spawned countless imitators, Strife: Veteran Edition is a love letter to the classic from 1996.
New Features Include:
- Support for high resolutions, with proper aspect ratio.
- OpenGL for video backend to provide portability and support for vertical sync.
- Dynamic lighting and bloom
- Widescreen support.
- Ability to freely rebind all keyboard, mouse, and gamepad inputs.
- Steam Achievements
- Steam Trading Cards
Completion of missing and unfinished options in the original game, such as:
- The planned "Capture the Chalice” multi-player mode.
- Marking of current objectives on the auto-map.
- Special HUD for the Torpedo weapon
We have keys to give away!
COMPETITION IS FINISHED.
Tell us how much you love us, and we will pick three winners Wednesday next week!

I think I played Strife once before on dosbox. Now that there is a native Version I will give it another try.

Look. I'm not going to lie, I tend to ignore gami sites and had even before gamersgate. This is mostly because of the small fact my computer hasn't been relevant since 2005. However I look here first since here seems to escape the whole industry bribery and morally wtf moves and instead focuses on the games.
Plus Linux. Linux needs more gaming love.
As for Strife? Played a demo way way back, but after it had stopped being commercially relevant. I liked it. Something easy on the eyes (a lot of games it's hard for me to track what happens due to modern 'must shove everything wizzing around all at once' mentality) and unlike Doom it has a story, NPCs, and the like. Yet it doesn't have cooluted twists and turns everywhere that makes me lose immersion.
Few years later I'd found a copy and since this was post zdoom getting strife support I managed to play and beat the actual game. I like Blackbird as a character. Macil always struck me as... Off, but I caulked it up to writing of the timetil the big mid-game twist. The problem was once the game was done I could find maybe one or two maps, both by Kaiser. Doom derived game, with no maps and missions. This made me sad because doom has gigabytes of fan content. One of its strongest features was the ability to add content.
I hope these guys get VE to run fan content without turning the new features off. I want to see what people will come up with.

Gaming On Linux is my mistress. I'm married, but I come to GOL when I need that extra-special, tender, loving care.
Oh, I also love Steam Keys attached to awesome games.

You guys seriously just keep pumping out the Linux gaming news. Whether it's good, bad, ugly, or just plain odd, it's all there. I frequently visit all of the Linux news sites out there, but I always come back here. Always doing raffles, keeping people up to date, and making inquiries to make sure your data is correct... THAT is integrity. A few places around the web like to sensationalize their new or make drama or misguide people, but this place stays relatively calm, despite it all. Keep up the good work, and good luck to everyone in this raffle.
Cheerio!
Sincerely,
~Aaron Morris, Linux gaming enthusiast.
