Banished is the harsh city building and survival simulation that the developer had always planned to port to Linux, but it looks like it's about to happen now.

I've been excited about this game since I first heard about it, and the reviews on Steam are great. I've seen masses of posts on twitter about how good it is, and it's exciting to know that the developer planned ahead for porting.

Choice quote from the latest blog post:
QuoteWith the mod kit and steam workshop out there, I’ve been working on porting the game to OSX and Linux, cleaning up code, and writing some new code. I’ll still be fixing bugs and making small changes, but my focus now is going to be on ports, and building prototypes for new games.

I’ve built a new machine for developing on Linux, and bought some Mac’s, so I’m all set with hardware. And it’s been a while since I used makefiles, other IDEs, gcc/clang, or did any sort of *nix development, but I have done it so I’m not starting from ground zero.

You can find Banished on Steam now, but do not buy it until the official Linux release, or risk not being counted as a Linux sale.

About the game (from Steam)
In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland.

The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy, happy, and well-fed are essential to making your town grow. Building new homes is not enough—there must be enough people to move in and have families of their own.

Will you be picking it up? I will be. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I already bought it, but I will consider offering it when there's a sale. This game's awesome.

I have been playing this game on windows (it was too good to wait) for few months now, this game is awesome ! after a few hours you just go into some kind of 'trance' playing it, its like meditation XD

Great, because although people say it works good in wine, it doesn't for me. The whole system freezes if I try to run Banished in Wine. And since I don't have a Windows partition anymore, I simply can't play the game.
I am excited to hear that Banished is going to get ported to Linux, I have watched people play this game. It looks cool and a nice addition to any game library!

The game looks sweet, at least looking at the video above. Looking forward to buying it!!

This looks pretty cool, and some of the animations (such as the rain) in that video were impressive...

Added to my "wish" list, with a purchase once it's actually available for Linux-based operating systems.

Quoting: GuestLooks (and sounds) really nice, but is there any goal?

no theres not. other than "survive the winter" its more or less sandbox where you just set your goals yourself aka "have more than X people in your village". as a result when playing Banished one is super motivated at first and then looses all of that the moment the basic mechanics (aka how much food do my people need, how fast should population grow) are understood.

its not a bad game at all, but its only good for a couple of hours and after that you will prolly never touch it again. what it really lacks is some kind of story, characters, growing challenges or even combat (wildlife attacking the village or whatever). Banished feels like an extremly solid base for what could be an awesome game but sadly it isnt one by itself.

Very nice, going to buy this for sure.

I can warmly recommend UrW meanwhile. It's complex and unforgiving, a PC game - http://www.urw.fi

I was given this for Xmas on Steam, but I can't get it to work right in Wine. It'll be nice to actually play it when the port is out.
