Egosoft's X Rebirth Actively Being Ported To Linux

Egosoft have been detailing their porting X Rebirth to Linux with a series of forum posts. It's good to see them be open about it, and we look forward to testing it out.

The thread isn't a month old, but clearly details that the process is under-way. Interestingly, the developers seem to discuss some of the pros and cons of the various debuggers and tool-chains involved, as well. Nothing quite as exciting as the outcome of the work though.

Regardless of X-Rebirth's (apparent) rocky start, it will be fun to sink hours into, while waiting for Star Citizen and Elite:Dangerous to catch up!

It currently has "Mostly Negative" reviews on Steam, so it seems there's a lot of unhappy people about the launch. The developers have put out multiple patches for fix issues, and the negative reviews are slowly turning to positive.

By the time it comes to Linux, it may actually be worth buying.

About the game (From Steam)
In the distant future, the X universe faces a period of profound and irrevocable change. While the universe stumbles towards an uncertain future, countless adventures await as new enemies rise in search of power. Enter a young adventurer and his unlikely female ally travelling in an old, battered ship with a glorious past - two people alone against the galaxy, playing a key part in the events to come. The fate of the universe rests in the hands of the player...

X Rebirth represents a spectacular new beginning for the X series, offering loyal fans and newcomers alike a vast, vivid and extremely detailed universe to explore throughout the game. Varied gameplay elements such as action-packed space combat, detailed trading mechanics and high-speed space exploration with fast travel allow players to experience a truly unique space saga that will keep them hooked for dozens of hours. X Rebirth features a whole new user experience - it is easier than ever to start with, and remains as deep as fans expect it.

Will you be picking up a copy when it's released for Linux?

Quoting: LiekkiIf you happen to like the other X games then you might want to pass this one, it is nothing like the other in the series.
I don't think being different is a good reason to skip any game without even giving a fair change to game. I personally think that X Rebirth improved many areas in X series and getting rid of S.E.T.A was a huge step forward already. Sure it has still its problems just like most of more complex games (CK2, EU4, etc.), but as we have seen Egosoft is working hard to fix issues and expand the experience.

Quoting: maodzedunThe game is notoriously bad. They're porting it to Linux just to squeeze a few bucks from unsuspecting players (i.e. people who do not dual boot).

Being a very frequent X-series player, I lurk in the X:R forums.
It seems that the initial X:R release was nothing short of horrible.
It was buggy, slow and a lot of the things that made the X series such a huge success (people still maintain X2 addons/mods), was missing (E.g. capital ships cannot be flown by player, many limitations over the huge-open-sandbox-gaming, etc)
In Egosoft's defence, since the release there was a frequent stream of patches that improved every aspect of the game.
Thus far, it seems that the consensus is that X:R isn't up to the very high standards set by X3:TC and X3:AP.

... Hopefully in time, the community will add the missing pieces. (Anyone that ever played X3:TC or X3:AP with XRM will understand what I mean).
