Free Indie Saturday - Just Shoot

What a lovely day. I just feel like shooting some idiot in the head.
No, thats never how I start my day. But I think the developer of this week's
game had "one of those days".

Now, lets start up with the brilliance of 32-bit. I do not understand why they don't provide 64-bit binaries, as I had to manually install about seven packages in i386 form. After that, (which took some painful browsing through package lists) I could get into the game. Worth noting, this game actually doesn't use Unity! (I've been having several similar issues with Unity games.) It uses the Cube 2 engine, which I haven't really heard about before, but it seemed fine! I had Spotify running and I wanted to review the games music too, so I tabbed out. That was the funniest joke all day. You can't tab out. This game was pretty odd technically, but I didn't really bother thinking about it. Maybe the engines fault? I dont know. I went into the game and was excited as it looked very pretty and pixely from the screenshots!

And then I ran around like a headless chicken. I just saw floating names. I didn't have a weapon in my hand like the main screenshot. No models rendered apparently, apart from the buildings. But there was some pretty vegetation though! This was a bummer. Lets just say the Linux version didn't exactly work well, because I got it running in Windows and everything worked out of the box. So, please note this will be a review mostly about the Windows version just because I could not get the game working properly in Linux!

So, you have this *awesome* crossbow which you shoot lasers out of! How? Got absolutely no clue, but who said games are meant to follow rules? Anyway, it's more of a classic FPS than a linear modern shooter. There is no real "singleplayer", (if you don't count the bot battles, but they aren't that fun) so you're gonna have to be browsing the countless dedicated servers using the ingame server list. I have to say, the UI was so clunky and I felt it was designed for 800x600 screens where you couldn't have any kind of detail to your buttons.

It was however, a very fun game when you got into it! It is an arena shooter, and there is no progression or online accounts. Run around like a headless chicken, kill, die, repeat. In the end, I was ranked sixth in my game! (I suck at shooters, so that was pretty impressive)

Check this piece out! Definitely worth sinking some hours into it :) Hey, its free!

And Sauerbraten isn't the only game that uses the Cube2 engine. The built in editor is great fun when you have the right kind of people playing. Nothing like playing capture the flag when you can add and remove walls and pitfalls.

I really felt like I slaughtered this game, but I actually enjoyed it a lot! I was probably pissed because I had to play it in Virtualbox, I think thats why I was so negative about it.

Oh, Sauerbraten uses the Cube 2 engine? Thats where I heard that engine before! I knew I had heard of it before, but I didn't know in what way.

I actually use the steam run time libraries to play Sauerbraten, it gets around the required libraries pretty well on almost every game I play and i'm sure it would work with Just Shoot.
The .sh script is ~/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/run.sh, if you have Steam installed
