GOL Survey Results: December

By -
The new year is upon us and so is the latest survey. There were 787 respondents to the survey this time, 400 less than the record set last month, but still a healthy number nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who took the time to do it and please carry on filling it out.

You can find the new survey here .

The survey will have no changes made to it for the first time in preparation for the month-by-month comparisons which should begin next month. GOL reader Fedso is working on a program that takes the csv files from Google Forms and automatically creates graphs comparing previous results. Once this is done, we will be able to observe trends for the first time and things should get a lot more interesting!

Otherwise, despite being a new year, it’s going to be another fairly boring set of results, leaving analysis for next month when we have a clearer picture of how things have evolved since the survey started.

Do you currently use Linux as your primary PC gaming platform?

Did you use Wine to play games last month?

Did you use a Windows partition for gaming last month?

Did you delete your Windows partition or stop using it completely for gaming last month?

What distribution do you use on your primary Linux gaming PC?

What Desktop Environment do you use on your primary Linux gaming PC?

Did you change your primary Linux gaming distribution last month?

image

What graphics card do you use on your primary Linux gaming PC?

image

Which drivers do you use for that graphics card?

image

What CPU do you use on your primary Linux gaming PC?

image

Did you exclusively buy Linux-supported games last month?

image

How many Linux games did you buy last month?

image

Which of these retailers did you use to buy your Linux games last month?

Unique Question - Do you use a gamepad/controller?

image

On to the unique question and I got a bit of flak for its question, with a perceived anti-gamepad “master race” bias. I just want to clarify that this was intended as a joke. The results showed that more than half of Linux gamers use gamepads, with less than 40% not using gamepads at all.

I use an unofficial Xbox 360 which works out of the box for everything with controller support, with one or two exceptions where I have had to unload xpad and use a series of cumbersome commands with the xboxdrv driver, then remap the whole thing on jstest which never saves the configuration. What are your gamepad experiences?

Conclusions

Normally there would have been a lot more analysis, but as a few people rightfully pointed out, if you comment month after month on incremental changes then you run out of things to say pretty quickly. The changes this month were all within 1-2% so this still applies and there is not much to say. However, next month expect to see a lot of analysis as we see all the results next to each other for the first time.

Please remember to fill out the new survey . Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

After many years of floating through space on the back of a missile, following a successful career in beating people up for not playing Sega Saturn, the missile returned to earth. Upon returning, I discovered to my dismay that the once great console had been discontinued and Sega had abandoned the fight to dominate the world through 32-bit graphical capabilities.

After spending some years breaking breeze blocks with my head for money and being mocked by strangers, I have found a new purpose: to beat up people for not playing on Linux.

"What are your gamepad experiences?" -> I got a Logitech F710 and it works perfectly out of the box, rumble included. And it's wireless.

It's got two mode settings, "X"(-box) or "O" (whatever O stands for) and I use it on Xbox setting.

The link to the new survey is broken.

Quoting: rodvilThe link to the new survey is broken.

The editor for GOL has changed. For some reason it takes everything as an internal link, so thinks the address is gamingonlinux.com/goo.gl/vCuazq - I'll try and fix this ASAP.

For now just copy and paste goo.gl/vCuazq into the address bar.

EDIT: Fixed!

My ps3 controller works out of the box, with no need to install a driver! I have tried a xbox controller with no luck...

The easy fix is to add http:// to the link, because the browser presumes its an internal link.

That's it exactly, all links need http on them or they will be classed as an internal link.

In the living room I use a Logitech F710 since it's wireless and I can get a ways away from the TV. It gets recognized and pairs instantly running under Linux, but in the past when I used to use it with Windows it would often take a lot of unplugging and replugging to get it to pair as well as initially needing to install the XBox driver before it would recognize it.

At my desk, which is where I primarily play, I use the Logitech F310 since I don't need batteries and the signal is much better than the F710 since it's wired.

Both controllers work flawlessly and out of the box under Ubuntu.

Removed: I missed part of the rules. I'll keep my opinions on certain Distros to myself to avoid a distro war.

I use a Saitek P2600 which, so far, has worked out of the box for everything. The only hiccup was with Shank, but this seems to have been the same for almost everyone.

This said, I do mainly use the keyboard and mouse out of comfort. I've only ever had two consoles over the past 30 years and started gaming on a ZX Spectrum, so kb+mouse is what I know best.

Gamepad experience: wireless Xbox360 + xpad SteamOS drivers from this PPA
https://launchpad.net/~mdeslaur/+archive/ubuntu/steamos
Working perfectly as opposed to xpad from Ubuntu repositories & xboxdrv from repo or ppa.

I like these results as I am in the majority in most categories making me a Linux-based sheep derivative. I use a handy little Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Redmond that works well. I do have a concern though. "GOL reader Soggof is working on a program that takes the csv files from Google Forms and automatically creates graphs comparing previous results." Will this be open source, because if not we may have a FOSS war...

Didn't see what you wrote, but thanks. We don't like anyone looking down on distro x users from distro y users. It's unwelcome elitism.

Nice to see someone does read our rules :D

That's suprisingly few people taking part. Are they getting tired of filling it in every month?

I don't know... The one before this was a bit of a "one off" because the survey was on Reddit and got an extra 300-400 responses. Though I always see a lot more article views than survey responses, so I guess a lot of people just don't bother, which is a shame. It would be ideal to consistently have it above 1000.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get more people to fill this out, let me know! Or just post links in different places.

It wasn't featured enough, so I've setup some automatic social posts for the next one across the month.

We need someone to post it to reddit too -> http://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/ (I can't or people whinge at me for blogspam).

Great, thanks! The reddit thing would be great too, but not really me area of expertise so would be good if someone else did it.

Quoting: GuestThe link to the survey is kinda hidden at the very end of the article, and the title of the article also says “results”, so maybe some people think there is no link to any new survey.

That's a good point :) I fixed it in the article. No idea how to change the title though without making it really cumbersome... Ideas welcome!

Another month, another survey where I was unable to answer most of the questions because I have not bought any new games since October.

I did buy myself a new faster graphics card in the interim though. That does kind of eat into my gaming budget.

So sad to see so much hate towards gamepads. Anyway, I use a wired x360 to game on Linux, and it works out-of-the-box on Steam.

I chose the "filthy casual" answer, not because I would hate any input device, but just because I never felt the need for one.
Hamish Jan 3, 2015
Yes, all jokes aside, I choose that answer as I have never seen the need for a gamepad. I really do not see what is all that sad about that.
