Steam Hardware Survey For December 2014

Here's the latest Steam Hardware survey for December 2014, and Linux actually increased, but not by a lot.

Linux results for December 2014
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 64 bit 0.42% -0.01%
Ubuntu 14.10 64 bit 0.14% +0.01%
Linux 3.10 64 bit 0.10% +0.01%
Linux Mint 17 Qiana 64 bit 0.09% -0.03%
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS 0.06% 0.00%
Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca 64 bit 0.06% +0.06%

Total: 1.16% + 0.03%
Last Month: 1.13%

My thoughts on it

The biggest change as expected for December, was from some people (like myself) moving to the new release of Linux Mint. A small movement from Ubuntu 14.04 to it's latest release and to the mysterious "Linux 3.10" which is most probably Arch.... and that is it for this month.

Important things to remember

Be aware these results will probably not be that accurate as we don't know how they do their percentage results, they could be rounding up, rounding down or truncating the percentages. So a 0.5% could actually be nearly 0.6% as it could be 0.59% but they could do no rounding and simply truncate it.

Also remember it is a survey, so it won't ask every single one of you to do it. It would only be truly accurate if it did it behind the scenes, but that's not what a survey is for this is just to get a general idea.

Final Note: Look at it this way, Steam has around 100 million active users, 1% of 100 million is about 1,000,000 (1 million) people. What developer wouldn't want to hook into a market that big? Of course it doesn't mean they are guaranteed that amount of sales, but it's something fun to remember.

It's always frustrating, this survey. I'd get it every three or four months on Windows, but I've been gaming on Linux solely since the initial release, about two years, and I've seen it once. And I'm on nearly every day, as I was when I played on Windows.

Perhaps they've changed it overall and Windows users don't see it as much either? We'll never get a clear answer however.

Yeah... I've only gotten the survey once on Linux (switched about a year ago). Yet I've gotten the survey most months on Windows. I find it kinda fishy but it most likely has to do with the smallish sample size (compared to the active steam community) that the survey is handed out to.

Quoting: Guest"it's latest release"
And confirming that on Arch, Steam reports "Linux 3.10 (64 bits)".
I'm also using Arch and Steam says: "Arch Linux" (64 bit).

cause jarno has lsb-release package installed but stan doesnt.

about the survey: indeed it seem to be more common for distro hoppers and wine users, cause wine version changes rapidly and you then get the survey more often - at least it seems thatway

Quoting: thelimeydragonLinux 3.10 is just going to be numerous distros including Slackware 14.1

I guess I didn't put that right.... I meant that, since it seems that most of the no-Debian-family gamers are running Arch, so the chances are that a "Linux 3.10" user on Steam is using that distro! :D

And sorry if this post came a tad late, it turns out I have much less PC time around the holidays because family and stuff like that :P
I barely even accessed the site during that time.... of which speaking of, I still have a GOL survey to complete ^_^

Yeah, that is what it looks like on their GitHub page.
If it is SteamOS that their are showing, it is weird how they don't actually say "SteamOS" though

naah.. how many times it has to be said..its the distro that has no lsb-release package installed..
you can try it easily with uninstalling this package and checking steam hardware info.

you can also try different distros in vbox and test it
