I know quite a few people who will be waiting on this, and it looks like The Banner Saga is preparing their Linux release now.

Going by recent SteamDB activity, it looks positive:

Again, we need to state that SteamDB is not official confirmation, and should always be taken with a grain of salt, but it means something positive is happening for us.

About the game (From Steam)
Live through an epic role-playing Viking saga where your strategic choices directly affect your personal journey. Make allies as you travel with your caravan across this stunning yet harsh landscape. Carefully choose those who will help fight a new threat that jeopardizes an entire civilization. Every decision you make in travel, conversation and combat has a meaningful effect on the outcome as your story unfolds. Not everyone will survive, but they will be remembered.

Features
- Player choice that drives your own narrative – every decision you make in travel, conversation and combat has a meaningful effect on the outcome as your story unfolds.
- Over 25 playable characters from 2 different races, human and varl, the horned giants – embark on your epic journey with a variety of characters from 7 different classes, each with unique abilities and upgrade options to fit your play style.
- Strategic combat with consequences - victory or defeat and even the permanent loss of a character depends on which characters you choose to take into battle and what decisions you make afterwards.
- The journey is as important as battle – your role in building and managing your caravan as you travel the vast frozen landscape is critical to not only your own survival but the survival of an entire civilization.
- An epic Viking saga brought to life in 2D glory – beautifully hand drawn combat sequences and animations, accompanied by an evocative score from Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, will immerse you into a fantasy realm inspired by Norse mythology.
- Multiplayer Combat Enhanced – sharpen your combat skills in the free multiplayer game “Factions”. Compete against other players with many of the character classes you see in The Banner Saga.

The Banner Saga is the first part of a planned trilogy. If you complete this game, your unique progress and storyline will carry over to the next part of the story. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I hope it's a proper engine port and that subsequent chapters will be released cross platform from the beginning.

It's been frustrating to wait for this one. Though it was a kickstarter pledge that it would come to Linux, it's been over a year since the game came out on other platforms. Not only that but they released on iOS and android which weren't even targets of the crowdfunding months ago. Their excuse has been that it's all depended on a single programmer to do everything but I would have liked clear communication about their priorities and progress. Getting only hints of potential progress every couple of months while they clearly are busy focusing on other things is unacceptable.

I'm glad I didn't back this game and I'll wait until it's deeply discounted before getting this if it does come out soon.

Exactly why I do not back anything any more, ever. I will never break that rule either, been stung too many times on waiting for developers who should just be open.

It looks like it's definitely coming, albeit slowly

This looks like a very interesting game, will likely pick it up when it releases.

Taylor Davis ("ViolinTay") did the soundtrack for this one, so for me, it's an instant buy just on that point... I do hear however, that it is a good game.

Added to my Steam "wish" list!

I could never get excited about the combat engine in this game. I've watched a Let's Play and the amount of micromanagement of enemy health seems to be a real deal breaker to me.

Well, Liam, I am like you for unproven developers, but for the ones who did follow through, if they go on kickstarter again, then I suppose that I may break that rule.

I have to say, apart from Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, Kerbal, and Clockwork Empires (All non-story driven games), I don't appreciate early access, as I am unliekly to play a long RPG three times just to find the bugs. Kickstarter is just a means of giving money to help develop a game for me, but to each their own.

I had a good amount of fun with the early version of Xenonauts, the players would all break the game and create montages of the AI cheating and the devs would grumble and fix, and then we'd exploit the fixes to break the game, etc. I guess that since the game was a average Xcom clone, the meta-game of teasing the devs was fun in its own right.

I'd given up hope on this, especially after learning that it was based on Adobe Air. It was one of my first pledges on Kickstarter and I'd pretty much assumed that my $25 was a waste. So it's nice to see some form of progress, even though I agree with BTRE that both their priorities and their communication have been abysmal.

Banner Saga is a stain on an otherwise pretty pleasing start to my Kickstarter adventures:

And funnily enough, it seems that things took a turn for the worse there too, since I haven't heard anything about Carmageddon either!

Hint I see it as a red flag when game devs call Windows "PC". That often means Linux is a low priority to the game devs when Linux computers are no longer worthy of being called personal computers despite the fact that Linux gives you the most personal choice with your computer.

This canard dates back to those days when you were required to pay for DOS to buy a personal computer, and, people being as joined to the hip with Micro$loth then as they are today :( , "MS-DOS" came to be synonymous with "PC." :><:

Every computer today is a farking personal computer, and I devoutly wish that sellers would call Windows program sellers would quit calling Windows "PC!"

Rant over. The Banner Saga does look uniquely terrific, and appears to have deserved the awards shown in the first screen of the video.
