A Reminder To Fill Out Our February Survey

By -
This is just a mid-month reminder for all those who missed our survey this month or haven’t got round to filling it in yet.

You can find this month’s questionnaire here. Please make sure you haven't filled this month's in already, if in doubt check if the unique questions seem familiar ;).

Please remember that the questions are in relation to your activity last month, so you should leave any distro/hardware changes you made this month for the next survey.

Also if you have already filled it out this month then thank you and there’s no need for you to do it again.

You can find the data from last month here (with fancy new graphs) and results for Steam’s hardware survey here. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

About the author -
After many years of floating through space on the back of a missile, following a successful career in beating people up for not playing Sega Saturn, the missile returned to earth. Upon returning, I discovered to my dismay that the once great console had been discontinued and Sega had abandoned the fight to dominate the world through 32-bit graphical capabilities.

After spending some years breaking breeze blocks with my head for money and being mocked by strangers, I have found a new purpose: to beat up people for not playing on Linux.

you should announce this just once a month. I dont remember if I already took it this month...

I think I did when you announced the results of the previous one

I definitely did the survey already. But some people might fill it in multiple times because of confusion (or not having read the post&title and blindly assuming it's the next one.

Is there a problem that not enough people filled it in? Maybe you should ask that we share the survey with fellow linux users?

I also have trouble remembering if I did the survey or not. I probably missed some of them.

There's not much I can do to stop people filling it in more than once. The only option that I can think of would be to have people sign in and take their emails, but I would rather have slightly less accurate results than make people give personal information.

Yes, the numbers have dropped a bit this month and at the rate it was going, I don't think we'll make the 1000 responses I'd like to get for a good sample size. The problem is that with the new site layout, we lost the reminder on the carousel so need to think of new ways to remind people to fill it in.

I'm considering other options. One could be to have a permalink to an article (say gamingonlinux.com/survey) with all previous results there and a link to the current survey - would have to work out the best way of doing that and see if Liam is up for it.

For now I think the best way to avoid confusion is by looking at the "unique questions" - if they seem familiar then youi have probably already filled it in.

Also, YES please do share the survey :)

EDIT: Added the suggestion to check the unique questions before filling in to avoid duplicates.

Honestly, i think we need some way to make sure people don't submit duped entries, even if it's simple.

An email is a nice way, or simply i.p logging or anything really that might be the same each time, as we will do reminders (reminders are good).

Thanks for the reminder, I almost forgot to take the survey :-)
You should do this every month ^^

Google Forms provides the email address option, which I don't mind doing if people are OK with that but I just get the feeling a lot of people won't do it if it means logging in so it defeats the purpose a bit. The IP logging would be ideal, but Google Forms hasn't got that feature and doing a quick scan around the web it seems that a lot of other people want that feature too.

I think I might need to consider migrating the survey over to some other software. I'll put out a call for some suggestions when I post the next results.

Maybe it would be enough to create a page which redirects to the survey. The page could then keep track of user/IP and decide if the redirection should happen or not. Another similar alternative could be to embed the form on the page directly.
Liam Dawe Feb 18, 2015
Sounds like a plan, as something automatic like an I.P would be great, and simply telling them they have already done it, and preventing them doing it again would be fab.

Edit > I guess one day I should whip up a quick GOL Survey feature so we don't even need to use outside stuffs. I need to implement our basic poll feature for articles first though I think.

The final question regarding AAA games is misleading. Every option suggests that I *have* bought a AAA game on launch day, which is not true. (FWIW I selected "average".)
