Age Of Wonders III Officially Nearing Beta For Linux

I will buy the game once it's out for Linux and it's a good port. Full price purchase, naturally. Great to see that this will happen soon!

I've never heard of the series, but I looked it up on Steam and actually went to purchase the original two games... Only to discover that they're not available for Linux-based operating systems!

I don't buy the latter games in a series without buying the originals, so hopefully the other two games get ported to Linux-based operating systems at some point...

It'd be a shame if they don't though, because these games look very similar to the "Heroes of Might and Magic" series.

Age of Wonders III is the closest we will get to Heroes of Might & Magic on Linux, bar Heroes of Might & Magic III on Linux by Loki.

Also, how did you manage to miss that the previous games are not on Linux? Most curious. Chances are the previous games will never come to Linux.

You've got Civ V, even though the previous games aren't available. This isn't any different in my opinion.

Only in exceptional circumstances (e.g. a game from a particularly-big developer or a game that I think would otherwise "further the cause for gaming on systems running Linux-based operating systems" ) do I purchase games without purchasing the originals...

I might make an exception for this game though, it truly is tempting, because I run the "Heroes" series via WINE at the moment and this game looks more polished.

I was going to tell you that you were wrong, because I don't recall buying it... But I just checked both my records (I retain digital copies of all my receipts) and my Steam library, sure enough, there it is!

Interestingly, when I go to the Steam store page, it says I own the game, but then has the option to buy the "complete" edition further down... Yet my Steam receipt indicates that I bought the "complete" edition!

My receipt says I got it at a good price though, so I must've picked this up during some sale...

What an odd habit. Especially given that many series will try to shake up the formula as they age, why would you have to buy the originals? It's not like you're missing out on the story...

Or VCMI and FHeroes2 along with the GOG releases if anyone wants to avoid a huge headache and a truckload of problems with old libs and/or play the HoMM3 extensions, but yeah, so far it's the only contender.

I hope this game will also available through GOG.com: The Windows-release is there. But lets hope the Linux-version will there also. :)

Just want no DRM through Steam, because the game itself has this account-force included for playing.

Like I said, I've never heard of the series...

And like is common knowledge, Steam games that have Mac OS or Linux clients are explicitly marked as such with icons that are difficult to miss, especially for a seasoned Linux user who has to look out for a Tux icon to make sure it's actually on Linux, hence why I said that this is most curious.

Usually you are missing out on the story and even if you're not (e.g. with the upcoming "Bioshock: Infinite" release, which is almost completely unrelated to the other "Bioshock" games as I understand it), it's just not "right" to buy the sequels without buying the originals...

Yes it's bizarre - my wife would be the first to agree with you there - but it's just the way I am with games (and films, and books/eBooks, and...), and buying the sequels without buying the originals (even with regards to major titles that will "further the cause" ) drives me batty!

I guess we all have our strange quirks, this is mine.
