Dead Island has been patched to fix multiple issues in the Linux version, so it looks like it’s properly playable now months after release. It may have taken over 3 months for the game to get these fixed, but it’s good to see the port wasn’t forgotten about as we thought previously.

With these issues fixed it certainly looks like the game is really playable on Linux now. We will certainly be giving it a real shot with these essentials fixed, as lots of people noted the bugs ruined the game, and they weren't wrong with the loot system broken.

If you have tried the patch be sure to let us know what you think to the Dead Island Linux port now.

Patch notes copied below (spelling errors and all!), this was a Linux-only patch:
QuotePatch notes [Linux]:

- fixed looting issue
- fixed bug with reparing a weapon (up to 100%)
- fullscreen is enabled by deafult
- fixed gamma settings
- reduced executable file size

Update: I can also confirm the frame-rate is much improved too, the game feels very smooth now. If you reset your gamma to default, all graphical issues (for me) seemed to fade too.

Check out Dead Island on Steam.

We just need Dying Light to have a performance patch, and we will have lots of Zombie fun on Linux. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Hah, was just playing it, and shut down. When I came back I saw this and saw that a patch was downloaded. :P But it was playable before to? o.O

Edit:
But it just about doubled my FPS from 80~ish to 150-160.

I don't really call a game that depends on a loot system, with a broken loot system, playable :P

What was broken with it? Worked just fine for me.

EDIT: The update screwed something up graphics-wise though. Reflections in pools look weird, and glitchy.

As I'm too lazy to list them myself, this forum post has it:
1) all boxes give brass knuckles

2) all computers give batteries, all the time

3) all zombies drop money and nothing else

4) all trash cans give alcohol bottles, all the time

This patch should fix all that.

Aha, didn't realize. ;D

Still broken with mesa drivers (radeonsi drivers), the game segfault after loading the first level

The loot system was freaking me out from the start. After a while I did get used to it and found alternative solution to get materials via trading. And I thought that repairing weapons to only 99% was actually a feature against too powerful weapons.

Happy to read this. I want to get home to test and play!!!

I can confirm patch fix few linux bug like loot etc. But another nice info is better performance. I have 5-10 fps more on my notebook amd gpu with catalyst driver.

I already beat the game with the broken system.

I may now go back to playing it to grab some of the achievements I missed.

Looks like the build version is 513663. Can anyone confirm that this is the new build?

My performance does seem up. Previously I was getting 75 to 90ish fps. Now I get 90-104 fps (I saw ONE dip to 89). I should really try this in windows at some point to compare. Has anyone compared the performance between Dead Island in Linux and in Windows? The performance in Linux was already good enough for me not to worry about it, I'm simply curious.

I've barely even played the game (a total of 3 times, with the first time briefly being in windows over a year ago), so I had no idea these things were broken. I thought I was only suppose to find money on the zombies, batteries in all of the computers, and liquor in all of the trash cans.

Tested it out and I can actually pick up loot now (other than batteries and alcohol) and fix weapons past 99% to upgrade them. Shame I completed most of the game already... Good reason to finish the rest though I guess.

I finished this weeks ago with no real issues using a geforce 560, it was playable.
The only bug I actually noticed was the 99% repair thing.
HadBabits 9 Feb 2015
Oh man, it's a bit different playing the game with proper loot! And it's running pretty nicely around 120 FPS on my GTX 760, although I noticed the lights flickering (in a graphic bug kind of way) in the first boat house.

My main problem now is that when I increase my FOV it makes the characters blurry when I talk to them, anyone got a fix?

edit: Soooo, turns out I was off. It wasn't the FOV, it was the changes I made to the varlist_dof.src (or something like that) file :P I've finally got the game how I want it :)
Liam Dawe 9 Feb 2015
Yup, FPS is over 100 a lot for me, much improved, very playable!

An unknown error occurred while compiling shaders.
is all I get now :'( :D

LOL!

I played through the whole game with the broken loot system. I thought it was odd that there were a number of weapons that I was never able to make because I couldn't find the parts. :-)

I use Debian (64bits) with 8GB RAM + gtx550ti, and although the performance looks good, I'm having crashes and freezes when switching to steam overlay. =(
jsa1983 9 Feb 2015
The game now works as intended with catalyst omega (Radeon HD 7870 with Kubuntu 14.04 64bit). It still crashes with radeonsi (mesa 10.5 git with llvm 3.7) though.
PublicNuisance 10 Feb 2015
I'm always happy to see games get patched and more playable.
