Dota 2's popularity is still continuing to surge, and it has recently hit a new milestone of over 1 million players.
It's actually the first game on Steam to ever reach this new height:
Dota 2 is the first game on Steam to have over 1,000,000 players online at a time. https://t.co/8ElvO1cmb7 pic.twitter.com/ATHnr4DCwY
Steam Database (@SteamDB) February 14, 2015
This is still dwarfed by League of Legends which doesn't have a Linux version, but it's starting to properly gain on it now.
The count for the last month's unique players is over 10 million too, so the game is extremely healthy.
Some personal thoughts
I gave up playing Dota 2 due to the absolutely terrible community. For a game that requires a good team to play together, the constant quitters and rather angry people do ruin the experience.
The major frustration for me comes from when you get matched with people who don't speak your language, and they proceed to constantly yell at you in their chosen language. You also do get a fair few trolls playing who do some pretty silly things; stealing the courier from you when you have an urgent item on its way is one such example.
If you have a full party of friends this can make the game a pretty fun place to be, so it certainly can be enjoyed with a proper team.
Do you play it? How do you feel about the community?
Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Quoting: eigensinnigHonestly I think it is a common place to say that the dota community is the worst thing. I used to play wow in wine until I definetely quitted all not native linux games and I couldn't tell any difference in the communities. Just like anywhere else, there are nice and not so nice people.I disagree.
And about the language problems... you just have to accept that there a lot of different languages in the world and nobody can speak all of them, so sooner or later you'll meet someone who can't understand. It is just the way it is, and it's actually a good thing.
It's obvious when someone doesn't speak English, so why are they unable to tell I don't speak their language? Yet they repeatedly spam their voice/text chat in their language like I'm supposed to speak it/understand it. It's annoying, and does ruin it.

Uhh, but it's 10.7 Million a month.
You mean 1 Million concurrent.

I still enjoy playing dota 2, at times though there's no doubt that some player totally ruin the mood in the game.

So maybe you should try other MOBA for Linux with better community (in my opinion) like HoN and Strife.
Played HoN a metric ton when it was the moba to play but shifted over to dota 2, hon was quite terrible in my experience but perhaps it's better now :P Strife is by far the most rage free moba in my experience though.

I think the "bad attitude" is more viral than a good one in a lot of online games because it stands out more.
It's easy for people to think that the entire community is like that, which leads to people mirroring that attitude or giving up on the game because it has a bad community.
Yet regardless of how it appears, I still think that good attitudes are more prevalent. Rarely have I ever seen more than 1-3 players acting like jerks out of the 10 players in each game. So roughly 30% of the community are jerks? That's not so bad really.
Just as an example of why I think the majority is more mature than that, people used to always say things like "commend me" at the end of every game. So at first glance this can lead someone to think the community is just selfish and the only reason they ever try to act nice is so they can get commends.
But almost as an experiment I started leaving little comments like "asking to be commended is not commendable".
and surprisingly I get more people saying they agree with that sentiment, they'll saying things like "ya, I never commend people who ask for it"
My point is, the silent majority is a lot smarter and more mature than you might give them credit for if you focus too much on all the people with childish attitudes.

I have to admit, Awesomenauts is pretty fun especially being fast-paced platformer, which does it for me more than the "slightly-more-than-point-and-click" MOBAs which I Loathe (FPS -e.g.Tribes 1- and Space Sims ftw!).
Have clocked >700 hrs on Dota, my most played Steam game. There are crappy people, but usually you don't get downright horrible people in your games. Playing with at least 1 friend makes a whole heap of difference - I rarely play alone, although that's because I pretty much hate MOBAs due to the aforementioned reasons, and only play to hang out with friends haha. You just have to ignore the downright horrible ones, and those annoying VOIP ppl you just mute.

Are you serious?! All MOBAs have poisonous communities, but Heroes of Newerth has the worst one of all. All hope abandon, ye who enter here.

A few of my friends were complaining about always ending up in matches with russians (who could barely speak english), turns out Dota 2 had selected russian servers for them by default, after changing the settings it got a lot better.
As someone also mentioned a few posts ago: use the mute button.

For anyone who have problems with that kind of stuff, I recommend creating a team with friendly people that you know it won't be getting mad on your actions in the game....
I myself would like to have enough friends that plays Dota to do that, then I would be able to play online without have to worry about being a burden to a bunch of unknown people :P (that really messes with me)
Maybe you could even create a team with GOL readers that fits the description of "not getting mad" :D

This article's title is misleading - it should read something more like:
DOTA 2 hits 1 million players online at the same time.
There are infact 11,000,000 unique players and not 1,000,000 that login each month. To anyone who says LOL trumps in players because they claim 40,000,000 players - that's nonsensical as the metric can't be compared. LOL counts players by the # the accounts registered, not by logins this month.
Between my girl and me we have 6 accounts, neither of us have played LOL in over a year as it runs like crap on WINE and Riot Games doesn't care. (DOTA has gained 6 million playes in about 8 months and made 40 Million Dollars off this years championship event in a matter of weeks.) LOL's fate is sealed - it will be a game for tweens, noobs, moms and baddies who can't handle the complexity of actives in DOTA whilest attracted to the boobage of Sona, Ahri and other champions.
Riot Games are lazy and too busy partying snorting cocaine off iphones while partying with young girls to do anything to enrich LOL suchas - I don't know - bring it to Linux and gain a highly technical market that spends lots of time and money on their PCs. Nope. But oh we're given a awesome new Reddit style forums that everyone hates, we get a music album and music videos - OMG LOL is sooo amazzzing!!! But hey! What else would you expect a company located in Orange County California? And now they're owned by the Chinese.
I have one last bone to pick - and that's the Riot Games strategically nurfs and buffs champions in order to perpetuate skin sales thereby putting cash into their bank, it's a ruthless tactic where your favorite hero's stats get dumped when X New Skin comes out for X Champion that just got buffed.
On the other hand, the strategic and intelligent valve rewards players for playing by giving random item and skin drops that entice players into playing more games. Skins, and Items are 90% cheaper than in LOL and players can resell items on the Steam Marketplace when they get tired or get a new preferred skin set. Valve is Genius.
The greed and lazyness of LOL has ruined LOL for me and many others.
(To those saying X DOTA2 player was moody/bitch and a bad experience, there's a mute button on the score screen - mute players on a per-player basis - so much better than when LOL disabled chatting with the enemy team.)
