We only wrote about the release of Age Of Wonders III due in April recently, and now they have already opened the Linux beta!

We are hoping to get a test key, so until then we can’t give you our thoughts on the title, or the port. Unless someone has a butt load of cash and doesn't mind parting with some to deposit a copy into our laps, we will wait. Please, don't actually do that!

You can see the official announcement here.
QuoteThis is the first open beta for Linux. Please help us find any compatibility issues by posting in the dedicated Linux section of the Open Beta Forum

There is currently an issue with launching the game on 64-bit Ubuntu when clicking ‘Play’ in the Steam Client. The game won’t boot.
Workaround:
1. Find the AoW3 steam install directory (Steam Library > AoW3 > Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files)
2. Type: cd (Replace by the directory found at step 1)
3. Type: ./AoW3Launcher.run ./AoW3Launcher.sh

About the game (Official)

Quoting: GuestI wouldn't say 30fps is bad or unplayable, cause this is not a first person shooter where fps matters .... ;)
It's bad. Because it's a turn-based game, FPS doesn't ruin gameplay, however that doesn't take away from 30 FPS being pretty poor for a GTX 970 (I'm assuming running at 1080p). Certain genres are more sensitive to FPS drops, but poor performance is poor performance, regardless of genre. Hopefully they get this better optimized by the April release. I'll hold of (at least) until then to get this.

I have a nvidia gtx670 card and the game is totally playable on ultra. However, you might try turning off vsync in nvidia settings to improve FPS. This game is a great addition to the linux games library.

I finally got around to testing the game in Linux. Runs pretty crappy on 4790k and 290x. 30 fps max when zoomed in and then drops to 17-18 when I zoom out. And this is in a mostly covered map so I'm guessing things will get pretty bad once more of the map is uncovered. Playing with the graphics settings made no difference in performance - it was the same on Medium and it was the same on Ultra. Also a strange bug - the game would not allow me to enter fullscreen mode or change resolution. The resolution menu just bugs out and doesn't show anything.

Yeah the fps is bad at the moment. Nether the less they called out for benchmarks and reporting compatibility issues: http://ageofwonders.com/forums/topic/performance-compatibility-test-2/

So if you can help out it may help fixing bugs for Linux ;-)
