BioShock Infinite has been released for Linux, and it brings a promise of some excellent FPS action with it.
To get this out of the way first; the port is done by Virtual Programming, so it's using their "eON" technology. The argument for and against it has been done to death somewhat, so let’s leave that at the door please.
This is the third port from Virtual Programming, and it's my favourite out of the games they have put out for Linux!
Once Steam decides I'm worthy of a download I will detail my findings, so until then you can either wait, or risk it and buy it.
Intel graphics, and open source drivers are not currently supported on the title, so you have been warned!
RECOMMENDED GRAPHICS DRIVERS
nVidia: NVidia 340.65
AMD: fglrx 14.12 (Currently only Radeon 7xxx and greater series cards are supported)
About the game (Official)
Indebted to the wrong people, with his life on the line, veteran of the U.S. Cavalry and now hired gun, Booker DeWitt has only one opportunity to wipe his slate clean. He must rescue Elizabeth, a mysterious girl imprisoned since childhood and locked up in the flying city of Columbia. Forced to trust one another, Booker and Elizabeth form a powerful bond during their daring escape. Together, they learn to harness an expanding arsenal of weapons and abilities, as they fight on zeppelins in the clouds, along high-speed Sky-Lines, and down in the streets of Columbia, all while surviving the threats of the air-city and uncovering its dark secret.
Check out BioShock Infinite on Steam now, but you may want to hold off for our official report.

QuoteAlso noticed that when trying to force "__GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1" to the executable, it will not run at all - simply gives out ~0.2sec audio and a blank screen, so nothing to test there.
I believe that might be because it's already enabled.

Quoting: LinasI was a skeptical when I heard that this is an eON port (is it, really?), but they must have done something right because it runs very well on high settings on my laptop with NVIDIA Quadro K1100M. Whereas Witcher 2 has (had?) horrible input lag, even on lowest settings, on the same machine.
I have to take that back. The input lag is not as bad as Witcher 2, but it is there. It seems that input lag is the "defining feature" of eON.

Wonder why they don't have it enabled for Witcher...

I don't have any kind of lag whatsoever, regardless on what is happening on the screen (on both games).
I do have some occasional stutter on Bioshock Infinite though...

What is the third port that VP has done? I thought Witcher 2 was the only other besides now Bioshock Infinite.

It's a matter of principle. I'm paying the same price as the windows guys so why will I accept to have a game wrapped in a shitty box with lower performances? If we accept this once then game developer will think that we are fine with this kind of ports and they will never bother giving us nicely Linux optimized games. Sorry but I'm not buying this.

Download completed. Ran a quick test before going to work. It started first time . Looks and runs great so far, just arrived to the cloud city. Why does work get in the way?

Not a fan of these wrapped "ports" but if they bring the good BioShock games over, I may pick them up during a deep sale.
IF I buy Infinite, I will buy it from GameAgent so that Aspyr gets paid instead of VP.

Quoting: GuestI'm fully aware Aspyr didn't port the game. I know how to read. I'd rather support the companies that do native ports. It *should* have been an Aspyr port, as far as I'm concerned.Quoting: adolsonNot a fan of these wrapped "ports" but if they bring the good BioShock games over, I may pick them up during a deep sale.

I'd like to know your reasoning there. Aspyr didn't port the game, they won't get any money from any purchase of it. VP have already been paid - they also (as far as I'm aware) won't get additional money if you buy the game, nor will they lose any.
Usually the Linux porter is paid when a sale is made, but it's possible you're correct and VP is already paid in full for their efforts. But how do you even know this?
In any event, Aspyr runs GameAgent, so yes, they will make money if I buy it from them.

So you're gonna play BI thanks to VP's efforts and work, but want to make sure they don't get paid for their eON technology, a technology which you are actually using it?

Except that I don't plan to buy it. I said IF. I already finished the game on PS3, and thought it kinda sucked compared to the first two.

Well, OK but the idea is the same, IF or no IF.
You want to manifest your resentment towards their technology by using it without paying.

There are lots of people who are now enjoying this "port" without having paid VP - they bought the game and played it on Windows before the Linux port was even announced. So what's the difference, really? I don't want to use their technology. What choice do I have? None.
I probably won't buy it anyhow, since I don't care to play it again. Frankly, it kinda sucks and I already finished it. I was just pointing out an option for like-minded people that they may not have thought of: supporting Aspyr, and not supporting the lazy port technology.
Do you work for VP? Just wondering if you're always on the moral high ground and never buy games in bundles or on sale, or if it's just for this particular case.

I think I understand now, is like telling the world how much you hate Windows by installing it and using it without Microsoft getting your money.
But I have a much better idea, something that'll put so much weight in your idea:
How about showing how much you dislike eON, by not using it?

I haven't used Windows since 2002. As I said, I don't plan to buy BioShock Infinite. How many times must I repeat that before you understand?
