We held off on covering Evoland as their Steam release for Linux didn't work until now, but we got in touch with the developers and they said they have fixed it! Evoland is very interesting for the mechanics of unlocking new gameplay systems and graphical upgrades as you progress.
You would start off with a game looking like it was made for the original gameboy, and end up with a game with modern graphics.
I can't say i've ever seen something like it, and can't wait to try it out!

Evoland is a journey through the history of action/adventure gaming, allowing you to unlock new technologies, gameplay systems and graphic upgrades as you progress through the game. Inspired by many cult series that have left their mark in the RPG video gaming culture, Evoland takes you from monochrome to full 3D graphics and from active time battles to real time boss fights, all with plenty of humor and references to many classic games.
You can grab it on Steam, or from the developers website (their website doesn't yet mention a Linux build for DRM free though) for a DRM free build + a steam key.
You may need to do the fix that Minty-Linux mentions in his forum post to the developers if it doesn't work when downloaded for you. It seems the game uses some form of Flash, which is a shame. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Good News!!! This game are in my Wishlist more than a year. Now, developers should translate it to Spanish

I played Evoland when it was released for Windows a couple of years ago and I really liked it. As an RPG it's pretty bare-bones, but it has some nice puzzles and a neat boss fight, and I had a lot of fun finding hidden collectibles and trying to recognize all the references.

Life of Pixel is similar in the way that you progress from old systems to newer ones. Totally different gameplay though, and Evoland did it first.

Interesting. Sort of Zelda like. Other than the parts with turn based combat it looks like it could be fun. I usually can't deal with turn based stuff, watching paint dry is more exciting to me than waiting for all NPC's and baddies to get through their turn.. there has only been one exception for me and that was Wasteland 2 (kind of), which unfortunately even after probably 40 hours I've never finished as the combat just got too boring. I know there are tons of people who like that kind of game play so hopefully it turns out to be a good one.
What Linux needs is more Torchligh/diablo style RPG's IMO. I finished my first play though of T2 last night and played some mapworks dungeons and I plan on doing a game+ play through as well. I went looking for something similar and there really isn't any that are linux native :(
