Today we take a look at 'In Exilium' that was recently released on Steam. It’s an interesting looking and simple hack and slash RPG.

It was originally released on Desura last summer, but we completely missed it. I decided to contact the developer to get a key to check it out to make up for it, and since it’s now on Steam it’s as good a time as any!

The port
The game thankfully loaded up just fine, and after setting everything graphical to the highest it could be, it maintained a healthy frame rate and was buttery smooth.

The intro cinematic when you first load a game is really well done, and I love the style of ripped paper and paint showing the backstory, a well done intro really does help you get invested in a game I think.

From the basics of it, It’s like a very simple version of Torchlight or Diablo, and that’s a not a bad thing at all, just a good way of describing it. It does have a few puzzle elements to it as well, so it is also sufficiently different.

I like the visual design of the different sections, that are just platforms that are floating in space, but everything feels so...empty? There are no quests, no dialog that I could find, and it seems it’s all down to you to explore. If you're one of those people who like to piece everything together yourself, then this will probably be you're type of game.

The graphics aren't terrible, but they also aren't going to win any awards here. It's all very simple looking, but it's not ugly, just simple.

Levelling is incredibly easy, as I managed to level up to level 9 in about 10 minutes of play. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but the first dungeon I found had a section only a level 45 could enter, so I guess quick levelling is needed.

The combat is extremely easy too to the point of being quite dull, so I think a game like this badly needs a difficulty level, as the level you enter to me personally feels like it was aimed at someone who has never played an RPG before.

I like the idea of it, but the execution needs a little tweaking to be perfect.

Final Verdict: It’s an odd one, as the port is solidly built, but the gameplay feels lacking due to the simplicity and how rather easy it is.

With a few harder difficulty modes, it would have been a far more interesting game. I’m hopeful something like that could be patched in.

Well.. I've been asking for more hack-n-slash the last couple of weeks after blasting through Torchlight II. I wish it had amazing reviews, but I'll probably pick it up anyways just to help show there are those of us who want these types of games on Linux. Plus, maybe I'll get some enjoyment out of it for $7.49.
