The developers of Isbarah kindly sent in a testing key of their intriguing looking action platformer now it’s on Linux, so I took a look and gave it a run.
About the game (Official)
Isbarah is a cross-genre of bullet hell and platformer style, it's a hardcore 2d game and each level is a duel boss fight.
In Isbarah, you have the standard platformer game controls and bosses will fight like in bullet hell games.
My thoughts
After my very bad experience with Bard To The Future I wasn’t looking forward to trying out another platformer so soon, but it did surprise me!
I can say that the Linux version works really well, and I didn’t really encounter any major issues. It did give me the wrong resolution to start with, but that’s a really minor point. I was able to quickly correct it for the optimal experience.
It did take me a while to get to grips with the jumping mechanics, and my god the tutorial took me forever to complete one of the jumps, I don’t know if it was me being simple, or if the tutorial section really was hard, but it was infuriating!
It’s one of those games where you fail a lot, come back, and then do it within a minute flat. Felt so good to get past the tutorial!
Action wise it’s a pretty fun platformer, and I do like the dash mechanic it employs. Originally I didn't like how floaty your character is, but once you really get into the game it's actually pretty useful when dodging enemy spells.
The battles are completely insane and over the top, and quite a lot of fun, but the balls the bosses shoot during their spells look a bit out of place, as they look like the balls in Osmos for lack of a better description, and needed a lot more variation.
The second battle also uses the same balls for their spell attack, but with a different colour! Thankfully this monster had a few different attacks, and I was able to start slowing time down to help dodge things, so it does get more interesting as you go on.
The character designs are excellent, especially each different god. Your character is a girl too, so that's nice to see, there still aren't all that many games with a female lead.
Final Verdict: It’s actually not bad at all, and that’s high praise from me for a platformer!
