After the influx of news recently you will already know that Shadow of Mordor is heading to Linux thanks to Feral Interactive, and the game is so good it has managed to win the GDC Game of the Year award!
Source

It will arrive on Linux this Spring, but we don’t have a solid date confirmed just yet. When we know, you will know!

In a PR email David Stephen, Managing Director of Feral Interactive said this:
QuoteMiddle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's immense scale, critical acclaim and well-deserved popularity with players make its release on Linux a major event. It is a monumental game, and we are thrilled to be bringing it to Linux gamers.

Feral will be releasing a mini-site for Shadow of Mordor on Linux when it's closer to the release date.

I have played it myself on a different platform, and I can easily tell why it has been given so many good reviews, as the game-play really is great.

After how well XCOM ran for me, and my glowing review of it, I have no doubt Feral Interactive will do us proud again this time around.

Finally, if you didn’t see it before; The winner of the Feral Penguins competition to win a copy of Shadow of Mordor was Hidekin from our very own website! Congratulations! You can see the official winner announcement from Feral here.

What an exciting time to be a Linux gamer! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: lucinos999 linux games on steam now!
Where did you get your number? Steamdb says 951 (working), Steamstore has less than 999 (some games are not available anymore, did you count them?).
SteamDB LInux
Linux games are 900+ no question, so we'll hit 1000 soon (fairly early this year).
And of course also in games the quality counts not the quantity!

I don't know why but Steamdb has many working games in unconfirmed state. That may explain the difference.

Shadow of Mordor will be mine!

Quoting: MaelraneSo excited too... I also hope that Feral brings a few of the games they already ported to Mac, to Linux too. Like Batman and Tomb Raider
Borderlands and Bioshock as well!

About the quality, Some months ago I had made a research about this exactly. I had a very interesting result. The quality of indie games was way better! Linux had also way greater percentage of indie games. Also "big titles" of linux although a lot fewer (as raw number and as percentage) were by no means worse as quality. And this made a strange conclusion.

If you name percentage of "big titles" as "average quality" then linux was clearly losing.
If you divide indie games and "big" games and not mix these "average qualities" then to my research it seamed that linux was easily wining both!

So depending the definition of "average", linux is clearly wining or clearly losing (but still becoming better because more big games are coming to linux). If you give high weight to the few "very high quality" games (and this is not wrong because one may say that these in fact really matter) then linux is worse in "average". (but linux is getting better every day especially in this metric). If you give high weight to the many "very low quality" games (and this is not wrong either because one may say that this is what "average" means) then linux is already better in "average"!

This may be not so much a surprise as it seams that quality games have greater incentive to reach linux users.

Quoting: EKRboiThis is going to mac too I believe. What worries me is that they will target the same OpenGL for both platforms leaving us with an older opengl core profile so it either won't look as good or it will look as good using extensions and performance won't be so great.
This is worrying indeed. If for example Digital Foundry makes a SteamOS review/benchmark this game could be one of tested games. If high-end PC with SteamOS can't compete against consoles it is going to be very bad.

Quoting: EKRboiI'll end up buying it either way because it has been a game I've been interested in. Was mostly just waiting for the price to come down because I wasn't $60 worth of interested so hopefully it turns out to be a fantastic port.
I think the game is one of the most overrated games released recently. It is extremely repetitive from the beginning and after an hour there nothing to see anymore. Nemesis-system is fun first 30 minutes but even that is boring and extremely simple if you have played Crusder Kings 2 (sure, different genre).

Actually I do hope they use OpenGL 3.3 but nothing more. Else I can't buy, nor play on Linux. :) I couldn't care less for graphics.

There might be two problems when counting games on Steam:
The number is lower when you sort the list by date, because there are a few games that seem not to have a date attached.
And there are some games not available in some regions of the world.
So in my place, Germany, I see 996 games sorting by relevance and 991 by date.
That at least excludes Football manager 2014 and 2015 and Dying Light, which AFAIR are available for Linux.
If that's true, I'd get a 999 internationally...?

With the new game Parallax, we now should have 1000 games on Steam, I guess?!?

My apologies for sounding harsh but, if you can't use anything above OGL 3.3, then it is time for you to get new hardware or just deal with the fact you have outdated hardware and there will be games you cannot play. If past games are any indication (they usually are) this game would get 15-20fps (if not worse) @ 1080p with an gtx970-980 with all the settings turned up which is completely unacceptable and they shouldn't even bother wasting their time to port it. On the other hand we have the Metro Redux games where they said to hell with older hardware, used OGL 4 and it ran 55-60fps most of the time with everything turned up (except SSAA) on one of my 970's @ 1080p. There were people who were butt hurt they couldn't play it, but it looked and ran really well on Linux. That series is one of my favorites from recent years as well.

Again, a bit harsh but it is the reality. We don't want Linux games getting the name of cut down like consoles because we can't run them. We are already a niche, don't turn it into a complete joke too. Remember this is also a DX11 only game for windows users so your card would not play it there either.

That is kind of sad to hear. Really makes me glad I didn't buy it at full price but also raises the question how in the hell did it win a GOTY award @ GDC of all places? Due to its high profile and coming to Linux I will still feel obligated to buy it if nothing more than to support Feral. ASSUMING it is not just complete trash on Linux and I know Liam or one of the others will SURELY let us know ASAP <3

I don't understand why the game gets so much praises. It feels way too simple and straightforward for my taste. I like games I need to learn and use time with to master. M-E: Shadow of Mordor is nothing like that.

OK, despite I dislike the game I truly recommend all Linux users to buy it. Giving support for Feral for Linux versions is very important things to do at the moment. And since the game has won so many GOTYs it is quite likely that most of the Linux gamers likes the game as well :)

Actually my outdated hardware is perfectly capable of using OpenGL up to Version 4.1, but not under Linux with the open source drivers :)

If it uses a version greater than 3.3 I'll buy it on Linux, wait a week and then simply play through it on Windows I guess.

Linux is my working os and I do enjoy gaming there, but before I install the proprietary drivers I'd rather switch to windows for the few hours I game.

I haven't used Windows in a long while, but that's the decision I would make, while supporting Feral and hopefully getting more and more games to Linux.

I won't buy no non-linux games in either scenario, so...

I still don't think they'll use OGL 4, or has Mac support for it now? (I'm not an mac expert)
