I have been hesitant to cover things like petitions and forum posts in the past, especially for Blizzard, but now seems like the best time to really get them to listen to us.

There is currently a petition going to get Blizzard to release Linux client for their games, but Blizzard actually replied to it and asked the owner to create a forum post on their official forum, so they did, and it is gaining some real traction right now.

The original post is here to explain it:
QuoteI am creating this topic as instructed my Rachel R at Blizzard whom I have been in contact with regarding Bliizzard releasing native clients for Linux.

My petition on change.org now has over 1,300 signatures and continues to grow each and every week. You may check it out at: https://www.change.org/p/blizzard-entertainment-support-please-release-native-linux-clients

To any devs at Blizzard, please release Linux clients. If you are not skill full enough to program for Linux then simply ask the community for help. The community helped Valve 3 years ago when they were coming to Linux and I am sure the community would be willing to help Blizzard, especially since this request has been going on for 10 years now.

Thank you.

That forum post, now has 9 pages/172 replies rallying support for Linux version of Blizzard games, and with a push from us here maybe we can not only make it truly massive, but help get a better official response.

Unless we show them much bigger numbers, it is still doubtful they will support us official. So let's get it moving shall we GOL readers?

I still maintain my stance that a petition has never given us Linux support for a game, ever. Forum posts directly to developers however do get much better responses, not sure why, but they do.

Personally, I own Starcraft II, but don't play it due to it causing hard-crashes in Wine in specific parts, and I would happily buy all future expansions if it came to Linux natively. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I did my homework and Signed. I think Blizzard should show an example to other AAA developers that Linux is growing and cannot be ignored anymore.

If they ever do linux native games, this will push other AAA devs to do the same..

Let's hope they listen...

The only thing that really could change that is Microsoft's making Windows 10 "freeish".

But yeah, you still need to upgrade to unlock your hardware.

Quoting: keikiIn the end all we can do is try to get attention and only buy games supporting Linux.

But I know how hard the last part is. I myself recently bought Game of thrones telltale game for Windows. Because it's a game I really want to play. Then I played it on my company laptop having Windows on it.

I'm really nervous about November when the first Steam boxes hit the market. This may decide if we continue to receive AAA Linux native games.

Yeah I agree that what happens on November would have a significant impact for the continuity of triple AAA games.

No way! I'm finally free of WoW, I don't want that temptation again. It running like crap in Wine is a blessing.

I couldn't care less! The time as the name "Blizzard" was standing for great games is long over. If they would have released a Linux client for World of Warcraft in the first two years, that would have been awesome. But if I look at the games which have been released since and what WoW has become. No, thanks! I'm not interested in their casual monetize crap!

Why should I support a company to distribute their own proprietary DRM-platform with name "Battle.Net" on Linux? The good old games like "Diablo", "Diablo 2", "WarCraft 1 - 3" and "StarCraft" are working through WINE, Virtualization or DOSBOX. Supporting a dongled "Diablo 3" and "StarCraft 2"? No.

Quoting: STiATAs much as I'd like to see especially games like SC2 on Linux, I'm unsure this is to happen anytime soon. There is a petitition, there is this forum post - and I may even post there, but I don't think Blizzard will ever give us Linux support. I'd say the chance at the moment is 1 %.

It's up to them to prove me wrong.

Well, Newell said (see the GDC interview) Blizzard is a Vulkan supporter.
Why should they support it, if they're not aiming for SteamOS?
If they stick to Windows, they could just stay with Direct3D 12.

Sure, that's not a prove - but a very strong hint if you ask me.

Maybe we see SC2 - Legacy of the Void for SteamOS?
Beta starts in March and Blizzard betas usually take very long until the final release happens.
This could perfectly match the official SteamMachines/SteamOS launch in autumn
and sounds like a good time scale for the GPU vendors to get their first drivers out.

They do have a OpenGL port of their engine too, still they didn't bother supporting Linux. Vulkan won't make any difference there. It is even confirmed that they have their engine running in linux natively for internal tests, still they didn't bother bringing the games.

Vulkan is not only for SteamOS or those having intentions for SteamOS, could be that they just look for an easy way to support their games on Windows and MacOSX without needing to do the DX/OGL port. But that wouldn't bring us just one step closer to their games on Linux than we are now.

Certainly, I'd like to play SC2, but as I said, I don't see a chance any time soon.

Since the Starcraft 2 battles are the most popular streamed matches in game industry, I belive there is a big love between Valve and Blizzard and chance of porting their games to SteamOS (Linux). As it was already mentioned and Newell himself has publicly announced on GDC that Blizzard is one of the supporters of Vulkan, so I belive there is a big chance to see Starcraft 2 on Linux. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense at all with Valve attempts to stream the public battles, if SteamOS doesn't get a piece here.

In that recent Video, Newell mentioned the supporters of Vulkan to be "Valve and Blizzard and Epic and Unity...". Could be completely random but maybe there is a reason why he named Blizzard right after Valve. :)
