You know since yesterday with our massive SteamOS news post that Torchlight II is now on Linux, but since the dust is settling we have had some time to check out the port, here’s how it runs.

My thoughts
I played through a fair bit of the first Torchlight and loved it, so I am extremely pleased to see Torchlight II on Linux. We don’t have many high quality Diablo-like RPG games on Linux, so this should help fill a big void.

I’m very happy to report, that we do actually have characters heads and faces this time around. For those that don’t know, the original port of Torchlight had a bug where characters heads disappeared.

I’ve been testing out Torchlight II for a little while now, and I’m pleased to say for me the port works really, really well. Take into account that I am on an Nvidia 970, but even with everything set to High I haven’t seen the game dip below 70FPS even when tons of action is going on.

I haven’t noticed any bugs myself yet, but I’ve seen a few Linux specific bugs on the Steam forum like this one, and it seems it’s an issue with AMD Catalyst drivers, and this one too, which also seems to be on AMD GPU’s.

I haven't yet had a chance to try anything other the single player, so I can't say if the co-op works or not.

You can see an unedited video of my game-play below, and you can see the FPS in the corner. Please note that recording does affect the performance, but not by a lot in this case:

Final Verdict: Buy it if you're on Nvidia, works fantastic for me. Everything seems smooth, and it’s fun to play. If you're on AMD you may want to wait until it's fixed up, or AMD release a new driver if it's driver related.

It’s also on sale, and it’s extremely cheap (£2.99!). Check out Torchlight II on Steam now.

I'm enjoying Torchlight II all over again though I can't help but hope that we might see Path of Exile one day ported to Linux (most likely will never happen up still I hope.)

I put another 9 (yes nine) hours into this yesterday evening/night, I was up til 4am playing. :P The ONLY "glitch" I saw was ONE loot chest had a weird shadow flicker, but it was gone as soon as I moved it off screen and back again. 99.9999% perfect port so far.

Well, I've done my chores for the day, so I'm off to make some coffee and probably spend the rest of it playing TII

I can't fire it up with STEAM_RUNTIME=0 on manjaro btw
Causes an assert dump. There's a dbus error in the console

I just ran a few hours with STEAM_RUNTIME=1 :P

Both the game and the port are great. Runs decently even on my GT650M. I only noticed stuttering when ganged up on by many monsters with everything turned on. Although in truth the graphics settings screen is underwhelming.

I'm using the steam-native package. I don't particularly like the idea of Valve littering my machine with libs that are old (and from unofficial sources for all I know). My experience is it normally works better (when it does at all)

A tad late update on AMD performance. The game plays relatively nice with my 290x. The framerate is mostly 60fps with dips into the 40s. Obviously not what I'd get in Windows but honestly way better than I was expecting an AMD card to perform in Linux, so it's quite a pleasant surprise.

40-50fps here with AMD Radeon HD6850 but I need to play more and disable "compton" to validate...
