As usual thanks to SteamDB it looks like Arma 3 could be heading to Linux. Arma 3 is a massive military sandbox from Bohemia Interactive and I am sure it will excite a lot of people.

This is by no means confirmed, remember content from SteamDB can always be an accident, or simple internal tests, but it's still exciting. I have personally emailed Bohemia Interactive for comments, and I will be sure to update you if they say anything to us.

On the SteamDB history for Arma 3 is this:

Yet another Wow!

That VP suggests a possible Virtual Programming eON port, this is getting interesting. I wonder how performance will fare with such a game in multiplayer.

This is the only game (and trying out Kingdom Come alpha) for which I restart to Win, so I'm all for it. But I highly doubt they will make Linux version. They invested heavily into their DX11 based renderer and AFAIK removed OpenGL backend they once had in A2. Maybe if Valve is pushing them Vulcan way...

Linux needs a good multiplayer FPS like this. I would prefer battlefield myself, but Arma would work too.

IF it is a VP eon "port" then they wouldn't need an OGL renderer. Eon is like a wrapper, it would translate DX11 -> OGL on the fly. That is how Bioshock: Infinite was done.

BUT, The inclusion of a data repo would be a bit odd for a VP port wouldn't it? They normally share the windows data and only have a Linux depot for the eon binary.

That's how it works yes, so I doubt it is a VP port.

Might "Tools" mean something bad? Like, it's only about a server or something?

That's what I'm thinking as well. Which it would make since since arma is built around its multiplayer/modding community.

ArmA 3 Linux Server files have been available for a while now via SteamCMD, but the "Tools" part still lets me wonder about this. :/
