CO-OP : Decrypted recently added in Linux support to the rather good looking 2.5D platformer, so it’s time for an overdue look at it with some initial thoughts.
It’s currently in Early Access, and I don’t usually like platformers much and would have sent it to our editor flesk since he loves to write about them, but the visuals hooked me in right away.
The fact that it has full gamepad support also makes me happy, as I really dislike playing platformers with keyboard and mouse. I think having my new Logitech F310 will actually enable me to start enjoying platformers again.
About the game (From Steam)
R3D is activated in what appears to be a recycling facility. He is subjected to some functionality tests under the surveillance of the factory's drones. While following their instructions, his receptors connect with BLU3’s; another robot that seems to share R3D’s unwilling fate. Together, they must cooperate to free themselves from their captors and escape from the "recycling" facility.
My initial thoughts
Performance
It performs pretty well, for the most part on High settings it gives me a stable 60FPS, but when you get the ability to zoom out and view the whole room, it does stall down to 40FPS on my Nvidia 970. Still very much playable all around for a platformer like this.
Graphics
I really do love the visual style of this game, although it does seem to use some sort of chromatic aberration with blurring. I don’t know if it is actually that, but it slightly resembles it. This could put some people off, as I know that can give people headaches.
The good news is it doesn't seem to use it everywhere, only on specific parts.
To me, it does look good and the odd effects don't bother me at all. Although, if it didn't have those fancy effects it would look quite plain, which is why it doesn't bug me as it makes it look flashy.
Gameplay
The intro sequence while nice, could use some work. The electronic voice which is quite well done is far too quiet and garbled to the point of being nearly incomprehensible. I get that it’s a robot, and it has subtitles, but it needs to be quite a bit louder.
Honestly, when I first started playing I really didn’t know what to think. It was very odd, and the platforming was so easy I found the start a bit pointless. I get that the first few levels are a sort of tutorial, but my word, at least make them interesting.
The game slowly seems to expand, but sadly for me it doesn’t expand quick enough to keep my interest, everything still seems so easy and quite basic. There’s also a rather large amount of repetition, with most levels seemingly being jump from a - b, spawn a box and use it to jump a bit higher. You seem to repeat doing this a lot, and it doesn't keep my interest for very long.
It does get a little bit more interesting when you get to control two different robots, but it still seems to keep everything very simple. For example: There are visual indicators for what you need to activate to let the other robot pass, so there’s zero challenge in discovering the right buttons.
It does have an online mode, and local co-op, but you need to finish the first 3 levels in chapter 1 to unlock them. I did try to do some online play, but instead of listing open games, you need to enter the name of a game to join it. So unless you know the exact game name of someone playing, no luck. I really don’t like that way of doing it, much nicer to just have a basic list of games, don’t make players struggle to play.
Bugs
There are a few bugs as well. One of the times I stacked a box on the floor and jumped on it, the box seemed to fly away off to the left of the screen as if I gave it a good kicking.
There was also a bug when switching between robots, one had a room that could zoom out, and the other did not. When switching to the one that couldn’t zoom out, the “Hold Focus For The Room View” text was blinking madly, and was extremely distracting.
Final Verdict: It looks good, it’s responsive, but the gameplay itself is rather lacking in fun right now.
