The day has arrived, not only do we have a new DLC for Dying Light, but the Linux performance patch I previewed for you has also been released! To quote a film I saw recently “what a lovely day!”.
The new DLC is “Dying Light: The Bozak Horde” which is something we also posted about recently, but now it’s actually here and has day-1 Linux support.
I’ve been pleased by Techland’s progress, and their communication is getting slightly better. Dying Light didn't have the best release, but unlike some developers they have actually kept pushing at it!
I did a review of Dying Light on Linux, and I still stand by it. The gameplay is great, but the ending was terrible.
Patch 1.0.6 changelog below, but weirdly it doesn't mention performance fixes for Linux. I tested it to double check and the Linux performance fixes are in there, and the AA setting has returned! I've poked my Techland contact to get the patch notes sorted properly, odd that we aren't even mentioned when it's a huge change for us.
Update: They added the Linux notes in after I emailed them.
The developer mentioned to me that AMD's Linux GPU drivers aren't great for Dying Light on Linux, but they will continue to look for optimizations they can do themselves.

Quoting: d10sfanLooks like there's two data directories on my system, a data and a Data. Which one do you have?
I have just Data in the DW folder (along with other files obviously), but no lower case data folder.

Before the patch: 18-30 FPS (mostly around 25)
After the Patch: 38-110FPS (mostly around 60)
settings: 1920x1080, everything maxed, Blur off, AA off, Distance minimum, Field of View +12
edit: even with motion blur off, there is still blur when sprinting.. which makes it unplayable for me.. my head cant keep up with that... also that chromatic stuff :(
otherwise perf is OK with few drops to 38 or 40 areas when lots of zombies in one spot.

I didn't really see much improvement. It finally got to 60 fps but it still drops down to 40 and 30 pretty regularly. Not very stable framerate, and this is on the balance settings with anti-alasing, motion blur, etc turned off.

It would be great if you could contact your contact at Techland and see if they could comment on improving the Linux performance soon, since it still has issues with people commenting here.

What is your setup?

I have an Nvidia 680, which can play other games just fine (Metro Redux, Borderlands series, etc). The main issue is the performance is better, but it still drops down into 30-40 frequently, which others have mentioned.

Funny thing: I went ahead and bought this game yesterday since it was on sale, anticipating having to wait for this patch before it was actually playable on my system (i7 4770k/GTX 760/8GB RAM). I got about an hour in (shortly after you're outside amongst the zombies) and didn't experience any of the terrible performance I heard so much about.
Now, with this patch, the game crashes immediately after the autosave notification screen, every time. I already tried verifying its files. I also saw someone on Reddit say they needed to move everything from the "data" folder into "Data," but "data" doesn't exist on my install. Any ideas?

Well, it now works with good framerates at high settings, but have this annoying issue where shadows appear and disappear very quickly right in front of me even when they're only a metre or two away. So going to have to wait for another patch... So close this time, it's such a minor issue but can see that getting soooo annoying even after a few minutes of playing that I'm not even going to bother.
Edit: Also the framerate might be high, but it's ridiculously unstable, going anywhere from 30-70fps even in the same limited area. Turning Vsync on stabilises it a lot, but then get maybe 40fps in parts where I was getting 50-60 without it on, still far from ideal.
Edit 2: Also, if I may be so bold as to make an assumption, I get the feeling Techland is using existing Linux users as playtesters for their "final" Linux version when Steam Machines come out. Every update is sort of "ok, now lets try removing AA and see what happens", "right, that didn't work so lets add it back in again". I don't really have a problem with that per se, but I still would call the Linux version a Beta build and the original release was an Alpha build and they should be a bit more forthcoming with that.
With Dead Island it was quite a bit worse considering the first 6 months or so following release had pretty much no looting and crafting since only a few items and weapons ever spawned. The game was a bit buggy, but I'd say missing one of its primary features in a way is worse than bugs, it's like selling a car without seats in it. I hope they get it together a bit more with their next game.

I'm getting the same framerate instability.
