Well then, hope none of you were going to get an Oculus Rift, as development for it is currently on hold for Linux, and no timeline for us at all. Same goes for Mac, So Oculus just went Windows only for now.

QuoteOur development for OS X and Linux has been paused in order to focus on delivering a high quality consumer-level VR experience at launch across hardware, software, and content on Windows. We want to get back to development for OS X and Linux but we don’t have a timeline.

Good job we have Valve/HTC for their VR headset eh! Personally, I'm really not that bothered by this, I still see VR that forces you to strap some device to your face as a fad.

Problem is I don't buy excuse about 'focus'. They have Facebook's money. That's more than enough to have someone chucking away with OpenGL support and expanding upon it.

They can get away with this and they will. As usual, Linux community will just shrug this off and go on, won't say anything and anyone who will say anything will get asked to get their reality check verified.

Also while SteamVR is released on Linux, none of big engine plugins are yet. HTC haven' said anything about platforms.

Also we have OSVR.

VR may be interesting to me with Kinect games, but I don't have interest in it for most games. I can move the mouse faster than I can move my head. Steam needs a Kinect type sensor to go with the VR.

How unexpected

All in on HTC and Valve!

I'm not bothered. The Valve vr headset exists anyway. Plus I don't really want something strapped to my head like that, and I'm not so short sighted as I once was. So probably couldn't use it anyway.

It's (now) a Facebook product, I lost interest in this particular product the moment Mark Zuckerberg got involved...

Quoting: RattleheadAlso we have OSVR.

But there's always this, and I intend to purchase this as soon as I am (financially) able to.

By the way, the OSVR project page (with the development kit, technical data and whatnot) can be found here, for the more technical of you whom might be interested in development and/or contributing to the project.

It's not about speed, it's about immersion.

" I still see VR that forces you to strap some device to your face as a fad."

This is by definition required for VR(as opposed to say AR), the whole purpose is full immersion requiring blocking out the outside world completely. Anything else simply isn't VR.
