Well then, hope none of you were going to get an Oculus Rift, as development for it is currently on hold for Linux, and no timeline for us at all. Same goes for Mac, So Oculus just went Windows only for now.

QuoteOur development for OS X and Linux has been paused in order to focus on delivering a high quality consumer-level VR experience at launch across hardware, software, and content on Windows. We want to get back to development for OS X and Linux but we don’t have a timeline.

Good job we have Valve/HTC for their VR headset eh! Personally, I'm really not that bothered by this, I still see VR that forces you to strap some device to your face as a fad.

Problem is I don't buy excuse about 'focus'. They have Facebook's money. That's more than enough to have someone chucking away with OpenGL support and expanding upon it.

They can get away with this and they will. As usual, Linux community will just shrug this off and go on, won't say anything and anyone who will say anything will get asked to get their reality check verified.

Also while SteamVR is released on Linux, none of big engine plugins are yet. HTC haven' said anything about platforms.

Also we have [OSVR](http://www.razerzone.com/osvr).

VR may be interesting to me with Kinect games, but I don't have interest in it for most games. I can move the mouse faster than I can move my head. Steam needs a Kinect type sensor to go with the VR.

How unexpected

All in on HTC and Valve!

I'm not bothered. The Valve vr headset exists anyway. Plus I don't really want something strapped to my head like that, and I'm not so short sighted as I once was. So probably couldn't use it anyway.

It's (now) a Facebook product, I lost interest in this particular product the moment Mark Zuckerberg got involved...

Also we have [OSVR](http://www.razerzone.com/osvr).

But there's always this, and I intend to purchase this as soon as I am (financially) able to.

By the way, the OSVR project page (with the development kit, technical data and whatnot) can be found [here](http://www.osvr.com), for the more technical of you whom might be interested in development and/or contributing to the project.

It's not about speed, it's about immersion.

" I still see VR that forces you to strap some device to your face as a fad."

This is by definition required for VR(as opposed to say AR), the whole purpose is full immersion requiring blocking out the outside world completely. Anything else simply isn't VR.

All in on HTC and Valve!

Valve drags feet with Unity/UE plugin Linux support.

VR headsets should not have software/SDK support, but system support. A standard, open and free VR support that should work with any VR headset, no matter if it's the Oculus, the Steam one, or any other. Much like you wouldn't expect to install LG or Sony SDKs to make use of your monitor.

You sure can make such claim, but in the world where TrackIR vendor uses screwed up interpretation of copyright so no one would produce alternative drivers for their hardware I think you will be in minority for this.

As I understand it, that is the primary goal of the [OSVR](http://www.osvr.com) project... Though whom utilizes such a concept is yet to be seen (well, we already know that [Razer](http://www.razerzone.com/osvr) will, but whom else I mean).

I'm super pumped for vr so this is a major disappointment for me.

Thank God (Gabe) that Valve too are working on a set. They seem to be my rescue... Again.

2 billions of funds and they give those excuses...

Anyways, Valve VR system is better, and also multiplatform, so the linux and mac customers they have lost, have been lost forever. Helping your rivals is always a great way to do bussiness.

valve gas invested so much time and energies for steamos!! if valve and htc will pause too, in german you say:" vor dem klo in die hose geschissen"!! translated:"before the loo in the trousers sh...ed"!!

Serious question, I got sick playing bioshock i suppose in part due to the FOV which i changed but still after a while I would get carsick. I have heard VR sets are real bad at causing this, has anyone heard if they have conquered this issue with any of the sets mentioned ?

Yeah, the "not enough resources available" is SO bullshit coming from one of world's largest corporations. How about telling the truth once and go "not enough interest" for once?

The latter is pretty much compatible with my own stance. I couldn't care less if they release on Linux or not as there is not a single trace of interest in VR in me. I feel sorry for all the people who were looking forward to it, though.

Hardware support is funny thing though, such excuses are used very, very rarely, especially about hardware which has lot of experimental nature.

I really don't know. Way too many times putting something on pause means it's canceled. If that's true, it's plainly stupid for company not to tell so. If it's not true, they needed better explanation what's going on.

I am tired of people saying 'yeah, I expected, we are not worthy' or 'Windows 10 will eat you alive'. Sometimes I wish Linux would have fanboys like Mac. At least then I wouldn't have to feel bad about using excellent, awesome and free operational system every day.
