By Juan Linietsky -

After half a year of work, Godot, the most advanced open source self-contained game development environment reached version 1.1. This game engine is a community developed effort to produce an open (and no strings attached) alternative to large commercial software such as Unity and Unreal. This release focuses on improvements to the 2D engine so all features used by modern 2D games are implemented.

I love this engine! There is a huge change between 1.0 and 1.1 all around. The syntax hinting and vastly-improved autocompletion are very handy, and there are more new features than you can shake a stick at! And good riddance to the purple UI.

Isn't UE4 the most advanced open source game engine? This is free software and UE4 is not, but aren't both open source?

Indeed they are. This must either have been written a long time ago, or should be tagged as advertisement.

I think this reflects a misunderstanding of what "open source" is. According to both the original definition and the common usage, "open source" is more or less the same thing as "Free/Libre" software. It just emphasizes different issues. Just being freeware, available for no dollars, does not make something open source, nor does even the ability to look at the source code. If you can't make changes and redistribute, it ain't open source.
