In a move that will please many (myself included), the Skullgirls Linux port has now been moved to a porting partner to be done officially.
Happy to finally say this definitively: Mac/Linux vers of #Skullgirls are officially happening! And not by volunteers. Not "if" but "when"!

I did speak to them a bit more over twitter where they confirmed it’s an outside port:
@gamingonlinux But we - or rather, our publisher Autumn Games - worked out a deal with a company to port it in an official capacity

I am also now in contact with the developers directly over email, so I have a contact with Lab Zero to bug directly about issues in future.
It has been a bit of a saga, and the developers know this all too well by now. It’s definitely about time we had some real good news for it, and this is what I have been waiting for.
While it’s hard to stay positive after waiting so long, and it not being clear what was going on until the developers opened up, this is still a positive move. It shows the developers are more serious about the Linux port than they were before. I feel like that is what we need to take away from this.
It will be interesting to see who is porting it exactly, but we won't find that out until it's close to release it seems. They developers did confirm the port will be Native though.
We will get it, and now it seems it is truly a matter of when and not if. Can’t wait to finally give it a go.

Great to read that it will be a native port. I do wonder why the porter requested that they remain anonymous, however. Have Feral, Aspyr, or the individual porters we know of ever voiced such a request previously?

Awesome! A decent fighting game is a must for Steam-Machines/the-living-room.
@liamdawe, great work on following the process of the port!

I had pretty much no interest in this game, until now. This publisher sounds awesome, taking it into their hands like that. I don't know their reasoning, but I'm content to assume it's because they care and want it done correctly and quickly.

It feels kind of sad saying this, but remember reading about this game on GOL way back (like maybe a year ago) and being pretty excited. Since then though Linux gaming has changed so much that I don't really care much for this any more compared to the tonnes of stuff that's out there.
I'm sure there's not many people like me though. People seem pretty excited for the game, the Linux thread on Steam has over 500 posts on it (the biggest I've ever seen I think).

I'm not a big fighter fan... Well except for the "Dead or Alive" franchise, I love that (yes, including the "beach" spin-offs - so much high-quality eye-candy!).
But I have Skullgirls on the PlayStation 3 and it's pretty neat - I can put my hand on my heart and say that of the games we know are coming to Linux-based operating systems, this is one of my most-anticipated... I'm not sure that it'd take the top spot, but it'd sit pretty close.
Of course, if you start to add games I want to come to Linux-based operating systems onto that list... Well unfortunately, it gets pushed pretty far down the list.
Anyway, I have this on my (Steam) "wish" list and as soon as it's available for Linux-based operating systems, I intend to buy it! It's not often I buy a game (on any platform) on Launch Day, but this is one of those few games I will probably make an exception for.
