The game is HandMade Game's follow-up to Rooms: The Main Building, which unfortunately isn't available for Linux.

About the game

Rooms: The Unsolvable Puzzle is a unique puzzle game inspired by sliding puzzles and platformer games. In a twisted mansion made of rooms that slide like sliding puzzle, player should find a way to the exit by moving rooms and using what's inside them. As player explores the mansion, various gadgets are introduces and make the puzzle more interesting and tricky.

Set in a fairy tale-like world full of magical objects and spooky stories, player takes a role of an innocent little girl, Anne, who were accidentally trapped in the mansion. As the story unfolds itself, player goes through the dark legend of the twisted mansion.

My thoughts

I feel pretty indifferent about sliding tile puzzles. They're not my favourite thing in the world, but I don't exactly hate them either. This game, however, caught my attention, with its rather unusual approach to the sub genre. The goal isn't to form a particular pattern by sliding tiles, but rather to line rooms up so that your protagonist can walk between them and ultimately reach the exit.

To achieve that, she often has to rely on various gadgets found in some of the rooms, like a Jack in the Box with a bomb, who can blow up adjacent walls, or colored phones that you can teleport between. Other items can only be used once or a few times, like keys that open doors and mobile phones that lets you teleport to a phone of your choosing. There's a wide range of gadgets like this, and that's what makes this game feel so fresh. You can only move rooms that you're currently occupying, so to reach your end goal, you often have to move between the same rooms several times, while also moving them back and forth.

I've played a little over an hour of this game, and it feels like a game well worth a look for puzzle enthusiasts. It does get rather difficult if you want to ace every level, and I've found that I prefer to just solve a handful of rooms at a time to keep the experience from getting stale.

The game can be bought from Steam, where it's currently on a 20% off launch offer.
