Indie Island is the free DLC to Dyscourse where 10 well-known indie developers, including Edmund McMillen, Tim Schafer and Rami Ismail, are stranded on a desert island. The main game was released on Steam in March, and I posted a review of the game.

The DLC was presented as a bonus scenario during the course of the Kickstarter campaign in November 2013. If you already own Dyscourse on Steam and have automatic updates turned on, it will have been added to the main game, and can be selected from the menu when you start the game.

Indie Island is much smaller in scope than the main game and the story only spans 12 in-game hours. I've made two play-throughs of the DLC, and each took me about 20-30 minutes. My impression after my two play-throughs is that the DLC seems a lot more linear than the main game, though it's hard to verify since the DLC lacks the handy rewind feature of the main game. If you've made a bad choice, you'll have to stick with it, but considering the short length, it's not really much of an issue.

Before playing the game, I had hoped that some of the personality of the developers might be reflected in the writing. Judging only by Tim Schafer and Edmund McMillen, who I feel moderately well acquainted with after seeing various video interviews with both, this does not appear to be the case. There's a ton of humorous references to games the developers have been involved with though, and that's not half bad either if you appreciate that kind of humor.

As in the main game, the gameplay revolves around making various decisions, which affects who makes it off the Island alive. Some of these challenges have a time limit, like when you're under attack, but this is not a game that requires any kind of skill. You will rarely be able to reliably predict the outcome of a choice either, so the appeal is mostly in making the choices that you believe will have the most entertaining effect on the story.

About the game (Official)

Dyscourse is an interactive choose-your-own adventure where you journey through a stylized world of choice and consequence. You play as Rita, an unfortunate art school grad turned barista who is now stuck on a desert island with a crew of misfit travelers. That last choice you just made? It may end up being integral to your rescue or you might have just incited a riot leading to a delightful bout of cannibalism.

Dyscourse is the Lord of the Flies plus a choose-your-own-adventure book, with a dash of LOST, and a sprinkle of The Walking Dead (minus the zombies), crafted with the humor and style Owlchemy Labs is known for.

Dyscourse is available on Steam and is 35% off while the summer sale lasts. There's also a special edition DLC available that includes the soundtrack, a digital art-book, wallpaper and a documentary.
