The roadmap for Unity, the extremely popular game engine has been updated. Apparently a Linux editor for Unity is in-progress, but it may be a while before we see it.
Note that the item is in the "In-progress, timelines long or uncertain" category of features, meaning that they have started working on it but it's probably not going to be here next week. We've had Unity support as a target platform but so far the editor itself has only supported Windows and Mac OSX. Many people have voiced their opinions and asked for a native editor for Linux but until now we saw no intention of porting the editor. But now it looks like game developers might be able to create games on Linux using Unity instead of just publishing for Linux from other platforms.
You can find the roadmap here: http://unity3d.com/unity/roadmap
Unity has been praised as an easy-to-use game development tool and would be a nice addition to the growing set of game dev tools we already have on Linux. Are you interested in developing games with Unity on Linux? Share your thoughts in the comments!
This has been a long time coming, as the request for the Linux editor is very high on their voting system. This request has also been updated to state that it has been started.

Yup. This is too little, too late for me. If they were like two years earlier with this rather than telling me to "use Windows and export to Linux", they may have gotten a bunch of my cash. But lucky for me, I'm pretty embedded in the Godot camp now, and it's making tons of progress all the time.

If, I can sum my thoughts on this up in one word, it would be this: FINALLY!
That one request has sat there at the top of the voted/wanted features for so long and had so many more votes than anything else. Glad to see we have at least some mention of whether or not they're going to work on it, and I'm even more glad that they are.

I wonder if enough devs would develop unity games on Linux if there were an editor available. I hope so, I guess they are doing it since the UE4 editor is on linux.

This is a long time coming, but good news nonetheless.

Oh, thanks for the compliment! But there are a lot more tutorials by other people that are more comprehensive and touch on more topics. I only did a couple, and would argue that my gamepad module is of greater importance (at least for now, until Ariel finishes the SDL2-style mapping support).Lucky for everyone else too, thanks to your tutorials!godot has been around already for a while... buy yay!

Wonder what that means for the updated version of Wasteland 2 since it will be Unity 5 based...

Nice! I already use Unity on Linux - kind-of (wine-mono), and even though it was never intended to be a permanent solution, seeing as code ownership on something this proprietary is limited, I am stuck with it since I have at least two commercial releases to keep supporting.
Running it 100% natively would be just freaking dandy. My main dev box doesn't even have Windows on it.

Between Krita, Gimp, Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine 4 and Unity Linux is actually becoming a viable game development platform. Now if someone would write a bulk 3d viewer/converter like Deep Exploration, and a viewer that reloads textures on a model when the window gains focus we would be getting pretty close to having some really good tools.

Has Godot proven itself capable of running a modern game yet? I see a lot of talk and a wall of screenshots on their homepage, but all unlinked and no references anywhere. Also those screens on their homepage - who one just must assume is built on Godot - all looks very simple, like Flash based games. But it's hard to tell.
