RimWorld is the surprisingly awesome colony building sim from Ludeon Studios and Tynan Sylvester, and it has a big new alpha. The new trailer isn't half bad too.

It's very much in the art style of Prison Architect (with their blessing), and it works pretty well. The different AI "story tellers" is a nice feature too, so you can play it with your own preference.

About the game (Official)
RimWorld follows three survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space. Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, and the epic scale of Dune and Warhammer 40,000.

Manage colonists' moods, needs, thoughts, individual wounds, and illnesses. Engage in deeply-simulated small-team gunplay. Fashion structures, weapons, and apparel from metal, wood, stone, cloth, or exotic, futuristic materials. Fight pirate raiders, hostile tribes, rampaging animals and ancient killing machines. Discover a new generated world each time you play. Build colonies in biomes ranging from desert to jungle to tundra, each with unique flora and fauna. Manage and develop colonists with unique backstories, traits, and skills. Learn to play easily with the help of an intelligent and unobtrusive AI tutor.

For Windows, Mac, Linux. The game is distributed by DRM-free download. RimWorld is developed by Tynan Sylvester and Ludeon Studios, and we've been improving it since its first public release on November 4, 2013.

I've played it over a period of months, and it's nicely coming together! It's certainly a game that can go from being relaxing to infuriating in the space of 5 minutes (in a good way, honest).

On-topic now.
I like Prison Architect, but the setting never managed to get me into it as much as e.g. Dwarf Fortress, this game looks like it may fill that gap!

This game is Early Access.... but so was Prison Architect. Both of them push out super stable, almost bug free versions adding tons of content each time.
I've owned this game for a long time now and it's extremely fun.

If you like PA, and you like survival... get this game.
