Anno Online is getting destroyed by the reviews on Steam, so naturally I need to see what all the fuss is about for this Linux game from Ubisoft & Blue Byte.

About the game (Official)
Anno Online upholds the traditional in-depth economics that are the hallmarks of the award-winning Anno franchise.

The key element of the game is the player’s main island, where the foundations of your commercial empire will be set. By satisfying the needs of your population, constructing new buildings and managing the production, you will unlock new buildings and face new challenges as your population’s demands and consumption habits evolve. Soon, one island won’t be enough to satisfy all their needs and you’ll have to discover and claim additional islands and connect them via ship trading routes to your main island. For the first time in the Anno series, players have the opportunity to be part of a giant empire and get organized in powerful guilds to work towards joint goals and server-wide quests. A key element is the trade of goods with other players creating a social environment of continuous player-to-player interaction for the first time within this traditional franchise.

My thoughts
I used to love Blue Byte games for The Settlers, but my how they have fallen. I can't ask for much since they are owned by Ubisoft directly now, but I will give it an unbiased look over.

It doesn't work. It loads to a menu, you click Play and nothing happens. The game has been out for 5 days now too, so I am surprised this hasn't been fixed, checking reddit and their Steam forum others are reporting the same issue.

It's a Flash game, so it's most likely using some single hard-coded path to Flash, and failing to find it.

Honestly, I wish I could write more, but it just flat out doesn't work right now. It's getting destroyed review wise too, so it's probably a good idea I can't "review" it for you, as it would probably just be another bad review.

Check out Anno Online on Steam, but only if you want to waste your time. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: GuestThanks for the "review" :). I might remember wrongly but I think I read that the game required Chrome to be installed to work.

Yeah I read that too, but I have Chrome installed.

The critics on Steam are really bad too.

Been possible to play as a browser-game for quite some time. It sucks. Have you tried Settlers Online then? It's the same shit with another name...

Quoting: seb24The critics on Steam are really bad too.

Why? It's a Browsergame and over 2 Years old.

Now the put it in a .exe/bin, but it's a browsergame (flash).
Oh wait, now you can pay the ingame content via Steamwallet.

I remember EA did the same in the past in the ubuntu store.

All the Steam reviews seem to be focusing on how it's pay-to-win.

I'm not. You will find an explanation from Jan Peterson (Developer) in this thread about Linux Support.

But nevertheless a little move towards Linux from Blue Byte & Ubisoft (Publisher).

Quoting: GuestWell if Ubisoft base their calculations for potential Linux sales on the sales of this game, we’re not going to see Far Cry 4 any time soon :)

This is a free-to-play game.

Or in this case, a free-to-not-play game, I suppose.

This makes it much harder to compare sales. They could, however, get an idea of the player numbers, I guess. But in any case, it's still apples and oranges, considering they're not even remotely similar games or executions.
