Coffin Dodgers is a good looking arcade racer that has been fully released for Linux. I decided to take a look and see if it’s worth your time.
My thoughts
First thing, the gamepad support is a bit iffy. It did detect that my gamepad was connected, but it has no controls actually set up for it. You have to set them up manually, and it didn’t work when I did that either. My Logitech F310 is a pretty common gamepad, so I would expect most games to work with it out of the box. I messaged the developers about the gamepad issue and hopefully they will be able to fix it.
I am a big fan of arcade racers, and I absolutely love Distance, so I was hoping this would be more lighthearted, much like Mario Kart for Linux. I am pleased to say it’s quite a lot like it, but different enough to be enjoyable. This would be a great game for both a young and old audience, and I can see a livestream of it in our future.
The graphics aren’t amazing, but that’s really not an issue for a game such as this. The graphics are pleasing enough for me to be able to have a blast, and a silly arcade racer like this isn’t meant for life-like graphics anyway. It’s supposed to be silly, and it pulls it off well.
The gameplay is quite amusing, with you driving around on mobility scooters as an old person. It’s pretty funny knocking people off their scooters with your walking stick too, or finding a rocket pickup and blowing them up. It’s easily the type of game I could enjoy with my son when he’s a few years older.
The addition of an online mode makes this game much more worthwhile, sadly though I couldn’t find anyone to play with, so you really need people on your friends lists for it. That’s really the only negative point for it right now, that the online is dead unless you have a group of friends ready.
Final thoughts: If you’re after a racing game that doesn’t take itself seriously, and you just want some fun for a bit then Coffin Dodgers is for you.

No issues here from the get go with an Xbox 360 official gamepad over wireless. Maybe your controller issue will be ironed out soon. I had a lot of fun with this one. Once you upgrade your kart, the racing is much more refined feeling, which is part of the addiction (upgrading). A fun little kart racer to play.

I bought it and here are my thoughts:
- The controller work if you use a XB360 controller. In the Unity article i already said something about the problematic backend responsible for input. My A4Tech mouse get recognized as a joypad (/dev/input/js0) in the position 1. This is a problem as this game don't allow you to change player 1 and 2 controllers.
- The game looks incomplete to me. You can't drift, and you can't defend yourself against enemy's missiles. That's standard features in big kart games, like Mario or Sonic titles. Also, the characters don't appear to have any different characteristics between them apart from looks. Where is the faster ones, the heavies, etc?
I think this maybe is the first game in Steam that I will ask for a refund.

I'm not sure if "not being able to defend yourself" isn't a way they wanted the game to be. Actually the physics are pretty neat, if you ask me and you can "dodge" the missiles if you move at the right moment (and they can then hit another player ;))

This exactly, it tells you when a missile is heading your way, and I've managed to dodge a few quite easily.

I was interested until I saw "Local Co-op" conspicuously absent from the feature list. Seriously, who *doesn't* put that feature in a cart racer, of all genres?
