DiRT Showdown is a good looking racer that is now officially confirmed for Linux, and it is available to pre-order.

We didn't know who was doing the port before today, but a tweet just sent out by Virtual Programming confirms it's true, and that you can pre-order it from their store.

The game will officially release on the 7th of August according to their store, no reason to doubt it as VP own that store.

Note: We advise never to pre-order anything, ever. The main news here is the game is confirmed.

DiRT Showdown for Mac & Linux, 20% discount on preorders only.

I hope it will be much more stable for me than The Witcher 2 for which I'm stuck at some level because the game crashes.

Stronghold 3 was very stable for me, Bioshock Infinite was also fine but it crashed from time to time.

keep'em coming guys! although showdown seems to be all about special/gymkhana events which is not my cup of tea, it's good to see major titles being ported to 'our' platform. hoping we will see 'dirt rally' running on linux one day too ;-)

Not VP again =(. Another game that i will never buy.

yeah, cool!
"Pre-order: This product is currently unavailable and you will not be charged until the day of release. Your order will appear on your account as a pre-order and can be cancelled at any time."
sounds fair.
I already have the game though (probably from some bundle).

btw: Release Date: 07 Aug 2015
VP games work very fine for me btw. Of course 100% native port are prefered, but
better a wrapper port for a 2012 game than nothing

really?

The only realistic chance we have of older games being ported quickly and cheaply is for EON/VP. Its not a trend for new titles, most AAA are native and when Vulcan is out they probably all will be.

would you turn down a near perfect port of Skyrim using Eon with full workshop compatibility ?

Im up for this i think wrappers are ok for old releases. Hopefully Vulkan will change everything and we will finally forget about wrappers.

I'm just going to chime in and say DON'T FRICKING PRE-ORDER VIDEO GAMES OR ANYTHING ELSE FOR THAT MATTER. Thank you.

Oh man, every time Virtual Programming releases anything I get a huge rush of mixed feelings.

Yes, because a near perfect port of Skyrim using Eon means Skyrim will never get a perfect native port and I dont want to give a reason to developers to think, that I'm ok with wrappers. If i want to use wrapper, which i will never do, i will use Wine.

I gotta admit, I've never been a wrapper hater or religious fanatic in these things, but with the current joy of experiencing Shadow Of Mordor running natively and smooth on my Linux box I've become a bit more hesitant with all that wrapper stuff.

I may still buy it - and boy did Bioshock Infinite run smooth in eOn wrappings - but Feral has demonstrated it can be done and there's guys out there who can do it. Today.

I am not `mad` at eOn or all these wrappers and stuff - but having win32 code on a platform totally different...is somehow weird. And I am positive: it will never be as good as a native port.

DirectX + vendor lock-ins and stuff should all retire in the interest of vulkan.
adolson Jul 31, 2015
As much as I want a DiRT game, I'm not sure Showdown is the one I want... And this has nothing to do with VP - I've bought most of their other ports. However, the 70% discount on Steam ends Aug. 14th, so I will probably bite.

Unless, of course, they are releasing this separately, and not as a SteamPlay title... In which case their 20% discount makes more sense, but I doubt I'll buy.
opera Jul 31, 2015
I dislike wrapper ports very much, so i wont buy this one. I only made one exception and that was Bioshock Infinte because it is an exceptional game.

Yes realy. If i will use warppers i can use Wine or CrossOver.
OK this Game in the highest settings RECOMMENDED DX 11.

If the game runs smoothly with a similar system (http://www.sysprofile.de/id161813 German site), I think about it again.

Finally, I've been wanting to play this game on Linux ever since I tried the windows demo a year ago. I'm going to pre order right now.

Glad to see VP guys are still in the business of bringing good games to Linux.
Had no idea they have a store, wish I'd knew that earlier to support them better.
manus76 Jul 31, 2015
To be honest I think more people should support wrapper efforts for the simple reason that we will never see all halfway modern games having native linux ports.
If wrappers like VP continue improving to the point where having a working, stable port of a modern windows game doesn't mean a year or two of coding and debugging but is instead a relatively straightforward, and maybe semi-automated process, it would mean we could have majority of windows games on linux and this would make more people move to linux. And this in turn would make developers seriously think about making their new titles native...and so on.
When more people want to give SteamOS a try sometime later this year, they won't be asking if their favourite Steam games are emulated, wrapped or native or whatever. The games just should run. Such somewhat 'political' considerations regarding wrappers/native ports (or open source/proprietary) are completely irrelevant to an average person who wants to have fun playing games.
