DiRT Showdown is a highly rated racing game that looks like it's close to a Linux release, exciting times for racing fans!

We don't have many racing games, and it's something I've been missing out on trying (until I found Distance).

It's worth noting that Virtual Programming (The Witcher 2, Bioshock Infinite, Spec Ops: The Line) ported the Mac version, so it's highly likely they are also doing the Linux version.
If it is by VP then it's promising, as their ports have come a long way since the initial TW2 port, but their ports are still far from Aspyr & Feral quality.

About the game
Race, crash and hoon your way through a world tour of motorised mayhem in DiRT Showdown! Crowd atmosphere, social gameplay and accessibility are all ramped up in this turbo- injected shot of driving delirium. Smash down the accelerator and earn the adulation of frenzied crowds at hyper-energised events at iconic locations. Trick, speed and smash your way to victory, then do it again.

You can see the in-progress Linux port activity on SteamDB:

Edit: Also, something that made me smile was this change after I did this article:
QuoteChanged Depots
branches/linux_test/description: hi people of r/linux_gaming ;) › hi Liam ;)

Whoever the porter is, they have a good sense of humour.

Reminder: SteamDB isn't an official site, and is run by volunteers. This means games that show Linux support could end up not coming out for Linux. This is not confirmation, but good supporting evidence that it is being looked into. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I remember in past Aspyr or Feral make also the same branch name r/linux_gaming :) Maybe they also making this port? :D
Also Dead Island for Mac is making from VP but on Linux, port doing main developer - Poland Techlnad. So, maybe in this case we can get a native port. I have hope.

Of all the DiRT titles, this is the one I want to play the least, figures. Oh well, still cool it's possibly coming to Linux.

As long as it runs at 60fps on midrange hardware (as all racing games should), I'm a happy camper.

Same here, but maybe it's worth to say that DIRT 3 runs very well on latest wine versions (> 1.7.37)

That's an instant buy at launch for me

at 640x480 with all settings on low I asume ?....... I agree on the 60fps part, the midrange hardware is a bit far fetched though

On Windows the game can run on high settings and 1920x1080 at 60 fps on midrange hardware (i3 with a GTX 660).

Also, keep in mind Feral is doing the port for Grid: Autosport, which has the same dev as DiRT: Showdown. They announced the Grid port quite a while ago, so I doubt they'd start porting another game they haven't even announced before they finish Grid. I could be totally wrong though.

Why? What makes it different from the other dirt games?

I played DIRT 2, and I quite enjoyed it (excepted the part that I only had a PC keyboard, so it was really hard ^^)
But looking at this trailer... I don't really like the music, the cars (and their decorations), the trailer is at 720p, and it looks like they haven't even turned AA on for the trailer :-/ Disappointing.
So, let's just wait and see, I look forward to your review, Liam.

Graphically, the game is actually superior to Dirt 2 in that it's newer and has a few extra effects. Codemasters definitely knows how to make PC games with plenty of fine-tuning options. The trailer was probably catering to the Xbox 360 crowd.

As far as gameplay goes, don't expect anything like Dirt 2 at all. Showdown is basically like a demolition derby style of game. It's just arcade fun. It also supports local splitscreen multiplayer, something Dirt 2 does not have. This game wasn't meant to be a sequel but rather a different style of driving with lots of collisions and events like "knockout" where you try to push another car out of a ring.
