A sad day in Linux gaming history could soon be upon us, as the owner of LinuxGames.com currently plans to shut it down. Although one of their contributors wants to continue it, and Icculus has offered to buy the domain.
I really do hope the owner comes around, as LinuxGames along with the now defunct Happy Penguin website were my inspirations for starting GamingOnLinux.
Writing on the website the owner "Marv" said this:
TimeDoctor, one of their only contributors in recent times offered to take it over, as the news obviously came out of nowhere for him, but the owner doesn't seem to want it continued, sad times.
Hopefully this will tempt the owner a bit more:
Good old Ryan "Icculus" Gordon, what a dude. I really do hope something comes out of it, as it would be a serious shame for one of my original inspirations to just fade away like the rest.

QuoteAfter 17 years on the Internet, AtomicGamer, the site who has been hosting LinuxGames is shutting down at the end of the month. I think it is time also that we put LinuxGames to bed as well. It has been a wild and fascinating ride all these years watching the Linux community mature and come to age. The passion that created this site has left me years ago and I know it is time to put the site to rest.
I would like to personally thanks Dustin and Al for all their support thru the many years and well as the countless people who have contributed to this site over the years.

@TimeDoctor hope you get the keys for the linuxgames website, a real shame if the guy just shuts it down

@TimeDoctor @gamingonlinux We are putting it to rest. Thanks for support and interest.

@mmalkowskijr @TimeDoctor @gamingonlinux Wait, even if it doesn't continue, I'd like to keep the historical site. Can I buy the domain name?

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Honestly, I didn't even know about the site. Though that doesn't mean it wasn't a big deal. I hope Ryan can buy the domain.

Honestly, I hope buying it isn't needed.

That's hilarious, April 1st.
Edit: Just for reference, they aren't new. They were my other inspiration.

That's sad news, and it's a shame if TimeDoctor can't continue to contribute if he's still motivated to do so. :(

I remember going to this site in the old days, sad day indeed. Also the one with guy smoking the pipe? Does anyone remember what the name of that site was? I

That was the Linux Game Tome and it provided a very useful database of games. It's something that should be replicated by someone else. Linux Games can suffer from lack of visibility.
That's why this site is important. I have bought a number of games after reading about them here.

Makes me sad when anything Linux fails, but a website needs to be taken care of and nurtured, otherwise it will just fade away. And that is exactly what has happened. I do hope that LinuxGames contributors and editors will find a new place to write a lot of exciting stuff. Like this one is pretty decent. :)

I kindof always saw GamingOnLinux as the next evolutionary transcendence of LinuxGames and Linux Game Tome.
Those sites earned their place in history.
They should pass the Torch as that is the GPL way - but sadly interior politics will likely prevail and some domain snatcher will pick it up and want $10,000 for it later.
