I am no stranger to fighting games, and I have been excited to get my hands on Skullgirls! I am lucky enough to be in the closed beta for the Linux version, so here’s a look at it.

I spent a good amount of my youth playing games like Mortal Kombat, so I felt like I was well prepared, but it seems I am more than a little rusty when it comes to playing Skullgirls.

The history of Skullgirls for Linux is colourful, but it’s finally nearing release, and I am sure it will make a lot of people happy. I have been cleared to post this up on it (I checked to be sure), so enjoy a small preview.

Note: Key provided by the developer, but that will never affect my thoughts on anything. I've been highly critical of the developers in the past, but see below for how they have turned it around.

About the game
Skullgirls is a fast-paced 2-D fighting game that puts players in control of fierce warriors in an extraordinary Dark Deco world. Featuring all-new game systems which test the skills of veteran fighting game fans while also making the genre enjoyable and accessible to newcomers.

Skullgirls is a modern take on classic arcade fighters with a hand-drawn high-definition twist. It’s a one-of-a-kind, action-packed competition complete with awesome combos and an intriguing backstory.

Initial report
I have to say, I’m really quite impressed at the quality of the release even with it being a beta! It picked up my Logitech F310 gamepad without an issue, and that has me extremely happy, as it’s far better to play it on gamepad. Skullgirls is a game that demands you sit back, relax with your beverage of choice, and watch a bunch of ladies kick ass.

The gameplay is incredibly fluid and feels like it belongs on Linux, and I managed to capture a little video of my second ever game not only showing it performing like a stallion, but I also won the match vs three CPU opponents:

The characters moves are all pretty fun, and mastering it seems like it’s going to take a while. There’s a lot of variation in the types of moves each character does, and that keeps it feeling pretty fresh.

The character design is where Skullgirls really shines though, the animation and design for each of them is simply fantastic.

Final Verdict: Very impressed, this will by my de-facto fighting game on Linux after the official release. Credit where it’s due, it’s really fun to play.

You can find Skullgirls on Steam here, but don’t buy it until the release is official of course. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

This one has been brewing for a while, and I am excited to finally get my hands, or should I say fists, on it. ;)

Liam, do you happen to know who is doing the port?

I was lucky enough to be on the beta too... its looking promising. It has a marvel vs capcom feel. Animations are great too

Just notice the character you choose is part of a dlc...

I have been dying to get my hands on this since the moment I found out it was coming to Linux-based operating systems... It's never every game I go out of my way to buy on Launch Day, but this is one such game!
