Starship Rubicon instantly captured my interest with its mix of space combat, visuals from NASA, and the promise of gameplay like FTL, only you pilot your ship directly.

About the game (Official)
In Starship Rubicon, Earth has been casually destroyed by a mysterious race of space-faring invertebrates. You are a fighter pilot whose cryopod has been collected by a possibly-insane AI, who has placed you in the unenviable position of being humanity’s savior. Shanghaied and alone, you must gather the remaining human survivors and traverse the surprising biodiversity of deep space to find a new home.
My thoughts
I'm comparing it to FTL as one particular part of the game reminds me of it directly. In both games you go through different sectors with different enemies, and it works very much in the same way. The sectors are different each time you play too, so it draws inspiration from rogue-likes there. Reading others reviews, it seems I'm not alone in linking it to FTL. It also adds in a bit of Asteroids too.
In Starship Rubicon you pilot your ship directly, and it took a little getting used to. Instead of WASD controls, you move towards the cursor holding down the right mouse button, it's simple, but does take getting used to. Playing Starship Rubicon has taught me one thing: I'm a terrible space pilot.
Combat is frantic, and I really mean it. Whenever you fire a weapon, your shields go down. This really helps keep the heart pumping, and it's quite difficult when you have multiple types of weaponry aimed at you. Luckily, each ship has a special ability, and so far my favourite is the ship that "blinks" towards where your cursor currently is, so it's a good trick to jump in and out of combat. Don't think only you have special abilities though, as enemy ships have a few tricks up their sleeves too.
I would really like to see Steam Workshop support for it, as they claim it's already mod friendly by using simple lua scripts, so it shouldn't be too hard for them to add the convenience factor for Steam players like myself.
Final Verdict: I think it's a pretty decent space combat game, with an interesting control scheme, and some pretty interesting ships too. Go get it.
You can find Starship Rubicon DRM free on Itch.io, or on Steam.

Is it any similar to SPAZ or Reassembly? I am a huge fan of SPAZ and I am trying to find a worthy successor.

Reassembly was just brilliant. I think GoL covered a similar, cartoony version of that game recently. I played about 20 hours of Drox Operative, but its progression is more down to steady RPG-style progression, rather than roll-your-own-ship type of customisability. Drox is good, but I prefer the more open mechanic.
EDIT: I was thinking of Captain Forever - [http://store.steampowered.com/app/298560/]

Well the control scheme can feel a little bit like Reassembly as you directly control the ship in a similar way, but I haven't played enough of SPAZ recently to remember.
