SteamOS/Linux Version Of Gauntlet Cancelled

By -
A developer has posted on the Gauntlet Steam forums about Gauntlet: Slayer Edition, a free upgrade to Gauntlet. In the same post the developer noted that the SteamOS version has now been cancelled due to limited resources.

QuoteSince all our focus has been needed on this free upgrade for PC, regretfully, the SteamOS version of the game has been cancelled. We hoped to have had that version ready by the time Valve had officially launched it later this year, but together with WBIE, it was decided that our limited resources were better dedicated to making the PC version the best it possibly could be. In our judgment that’s both what you PC players deserve, and what the PS4 version needs for the August release. We’re hoping that instead, you will enjoy the updates coming next month in Gauntlet: Slayer Edition as much as we do ourselves!

You can read the full post here.

So, that's that then, no Gauntlet for the penguin crowd it seems. I've done a quick scan of the Steam forums and it seems some people did pre-purchase the game due to the earlier promise of a Linux port. You might already be familiar with my attitude towards pre-orders and pre-purchases but I'll give you a small reminder: DON'T FRICKING DO IT.

This should be a good example of what could happen if you do not follow the mantra "don't buy before it's out". Hopefully the folks who bought early can get the game refunded. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

If that's what we deserve, then I'll be happily spending my money on the numerous other games awaiting in my wish list.

Sorry but their resources are not more limited now than they were when they promised the port to us in order to get our money.

I did not preorder it, nor was I waiting for it to be released, but that's yet another poor excuse that'll only cost them money because of refunds.

So, yeah, so long Gauntlet. We will not miss you.

Nothing is ever released on Linux until it is released on Linux.

They could at least learn saying "Windows".

Exactly my thoughts when I read the quote.

well if you bought it within a year of the new policy on steam, and the game was released late 2014 so that is certain, you can just get a refund.

Not a big loss, as the game doesn't seem very good from what I've heard (maybe it has improved since its release or will with this Slayer Edition, though).

About people pre-ordering, can't they ask a refund from Steam, as it has been made easier recently? Maybe there's a time limit (I heard about two monthes after purchase, not sure where) but "the game won't run on my OS because the developer changed their mind about SteamOS" might be an argument.

Oh come on, if they want to say PC, let them have it. It is just as meaningless as the whole Linux vs GNU/Linux debate. Sometimes the distinction is important, but most of the time it is not.

I think we will remember this when they want us to buy any other games they may promise in the future. If that day comes, my money resources will be best used to improve other developer's wallets that aren't jerks and cancel games they promise on linux/steamOS.

Maybe a job for Feral. According to their radar, they must run out of work in the near future.

In my regular skimmings through Kickstarter when updating the crowdfunding wiki I come by a lot of campaigns with ambiguous platform support statements like "this game will be available for PC". You'd be really surprised how many times the devs really mean "Personal Computer" (i.e. Windows+Mac+Linux) and not only "Windows".

So no, even if Steam does it, "PC" does not always equate to "Windows" and it can lead to confusion.

Poor show.

Oh well, another lying developer to avoid. :(

Too bad, "Sword Cost Legends" is better in everysingle aspect it would be a stillborn game in linux.

I am not fussed as the game did not make it onto my wishlist. I cannot keep up with all these games anyway, despite having a lot of free time at the moment.

BTW, will SPLOT ever hit Linux as promised?
What's the state there?
Mountain Man Jul 24, 2015
Their loss then. This is why developers need to make their software cross platform from day one instead of making a Windows version first and then trying to port it to Linux.

Also, we need to get it through people's heads that PC is not synonymous with Windows. Windows is Windows. PC simply means "personal computer" and can refer to Linux, OSX, and Windows.

I probably would've tossed them the $20 (well less than that, I almost always wait for a sale), as I have hard Gauntlet nostalgia. And a friend who loves it. But with no Linux port... I guess we'll have to beat through the many other previous iterations of it on emulators. Maybe they'll turn me into a paying customer one day.
wolfyrion Jul 24, 2015
well there are some people who got tricked and pre-order the game like The Witcher 3...

Both games show up on pre-order a tux icon then they have removed it ... :(

Oh well. One game I will have to remove from my steam wishlist. With 1300+ games, it's not like if it there was no other options. Still I used to play this game a lot when it was on NES... Too bad for my nostalgia. :)

From the guys who brought you "I'm american" and "Let's play some football".... comes.... "this game will be available for PC"

They just love to do this, I hate specifying that I'm american but not from the US, that's so annoying! Europeans and Asians don't have to do this. And don't even get me started with football, the original football you know? you know which one it is right?

What's with people and taking names for something that's more general and just shove it to something specific, that's what the people who say PC when they intend to say Windows are doing. And I rightfully hate that practice.

Sorry for my rant.

Rant justified! The PC vs Windows argument, in my head, sounds like promising a game for "Europe", then only releasing it in, say, "Germany". Quite rightly, French, British and Spanish (and others) would be pretty upset.

A developer who uses this term deserves nothing but a healthy dose of contempt. You instantly know what their focus is and how seriously they take other platforms.

As for Muntdefems comment, he's bang on that this ambiguity ends up costing time/effort when researching crowd funding - it's bad enough to deal with this kind of vague term as a consumer, but when you're actively involved in digging out facts for news, it's properly infuriating.
