The Terraria developers have confirmed the Linux version will launch tomorrow in open beta, I can't wait.
We will be releasing Mac/Linux as open beta tomorrow. Will have more details on this in the morning.

I've been wanting to play it for a long time, and tomorrow I will finally be able to see what all the fuss is about!

Terraria was first; but Starbound was multiplatform from the start.
Aside from the fact that Starbound is in early access and very active development, which one should I play?

Mambo: It's up to you if you like space theme with planets, aliens, spaceships, OR fantasy, more "minecrafty" game. I recommend Starbound, but whatever :D

Excellent. Sadly I already bought this ages ago so can't register a Linux sale. Could gift I guess but whilst can purchase on Linux, if I gift it'll probably be played on windows.

I can tell you which one I recommend playing - I have 457 hours of Terraria and 27 hours of Starbound.
Additionally - Starbound has 1.9 million owners whereas Terraria has 6.3 million owners.
Starbound has 2,600 players online right now whereas Terraria has 67,000 players online.

Even though Starbound was started by the Ex-Terraria Spriter, it plays nothing like Terraria when it comes to building towers, homes, etc... Terraria is a excellent team LAN game and will continue to be in my top 10. I'm so happy! :)

Terraria was actually released before many sandbox games, it's been in the top sellers on the Steam Sale year after year. Just like Wine and WOW - it now has the advantage of 4 years of content since the initial release.

I wanted so much to play this game the last few days but I wanted to wait fo a Linux release. Looks like my patience was well rewarded :D. I mean, I knew it was coming soon, but not that soon.
I'm very happy this game got ported, IMO it is a must-have on Linux and any other platform.
I would have bought the game but sadly I already did that since before I even considered Linux... :( And all of my friends that I want to play this game with, already own it. :(
Also, I really don't get why people say that Terraria is a copy of Minecraft but 2D... IMO the games are very different (and by that I mean more that the 2D/3D stuff). For me the gameplay feels completely different. I mean yeah, you mine and you craft, maybe build cool stuff, but Terraria also has a TON of diversity, item hunting, boss hunting, events etc. They have simmilarities but they are still very different.
Anyway, nowdays all games that allow you to build stuff are called Minecraft copies for some reason.

According to what we know of the Steam process of accounting sells to OSs, you probably could buy it under Linux, wait for some weeks and then gift it.
