Arma 3 Available For Linux In A Beta

By -
tagline-image
Arma 3 is now downloadable and playable on Linux, but be warned it's early days for the port, and the port may not graduate to official status.

You can find more information on their official port page here. This page will detail limitations and such, and is an important read.

Early reports are encouraging though, with one user noting they are getting a solid 60FPS at 1440p resolution on a 970.

I ordered a copy to play around with, as I was too impatient to wait to see if we could get a key. During my livestream of it I played over an hour, and everything pretty much worked as expected. I was able to get a good solid framerate, and most importantly smooth gameplay on Very High settings on my Nvidia 970.

The game is very CPU heavy, so it's really not for lower-end users, please remember that. It's a hog even on Windows.

Find Arma 3 on Steam, but only buy it if you're prepare to lose access to it on Linux if it doesn't get promoted to stable in future. I hope it works out for both VP and the Arma developers, as it would be a great game to have officially on Linux.

I hope the port is good and it becomes a permanent thing. As for the game itself, I've always been very intimidated by the ARMA games, which will probably keep me from ever playing it.

Quoting: aristoriasDoes it run with AMD at all? I own an A10-7850k...

Would like to know too, 290x user here. Anyone?
Your friendly neighbourhood idiot with a big wallet is here to save you.

I await you report.... :D

Quoting: edoIf the game is bought now, is it counted as a linux purchase? since the game is windows-only on the store. If I had to bet I would say than it will count as a windows key.
AFAIK the symbol has nothing to do with it. The OS with the longest playtime in the first two weeks gets the credit. If not played then it should be the OS used to purchase.

I bought it back in alfa and played it for over 100 hours. Downloading....

Well, the default graphical setting was a bit silly.

I used the dropdown to Very High and it's much nicer performance, seems smooth so far. It does dip, but that's to be expected. In a firefight it dropped down to around 45FPS, but it was still smooth and playable.

Mouse doesn't work for interacting with the UI, very annoying, but should be easy for them to fix.

So far, I'm quite impressed.

Edit: You can turn bloom & blur down to zero, that makes me rather happy. Both are icky. Performance went up a bit doing that too I'm sure, and oh I died :(

So, do you think that i can spend 60€ to buy this game ? (I have a laptop with a 970MX)

The more Windows benchmarks I'm seeing, the more reasonable my figures are looking. Looks like it's a very CPU heavy game, and seeing people on my CPU with a GPU that's close having worse/around the same figures is encouraging.

Video for thought: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otlwZbOTkDg

That guy has the same CPU+GPU as me, and he is seeing about the same+bit lower performance.

So, do we consider that a win?

For me is unplayable atm.......

It launches on my second monitor and I cannot click on anything.

I can browse with keyboard though and enjoy the........ Menu........ :(

Use that in Steam's launch options, fixes both issues for me.
