Don't Count On Any EA Frostbite Powered Games On Linux

By -
Sad, but not unexpected news as the Technical Director on Frostbite at Electronic Arts has said seeing their games on Linux is unlikely.

@HeavyHDx very unlikely

— Johan Andersson (@repi) September 12, 2015

When asked why he had a simple answer:

@HeavyHDx less then 1% of the potential audience, even Mac (which we don't support) is more than 3x larger. http://t.co/o6DCeTCh4E

That's fine, and completely understandable. The only reason we are getting some bigger games right now is Aspyr, Feral and a few others are hoping on a good future with Steam Machines, so it's not unexpected for a huge company like EA to not do Linux right now.

It's a shame, as before a member of DICE said they strongly wanted to get into Linux, so I guess it never worked out for them.

It is yet another reason why I really hope Steam Machines get included in the Steam survey somehow, I mean Valve want to show the market share for it has grown after release right? I do wonder how they will do this. I haven't seen them talk about this anywhere, so we will have to wait and see. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I wonder who did?

The question is not whether EA wants to get on Linux, the question is whether I want to play games by EA. Apart from Mirror's Edge I can't think of a single title I'd bother with.
Pecisk Sep 12, 2015
First, at this point I don't even think it was worth to ask and second, so few EA games I really care about.
Jarno Sep 12, 2015
I dont see any point to support EA even if they would port their games to linux.

Eh, i dont care... I don't like their games on frosbite engine either, not because the engine is bad, but i just dont like their game play style. I used to love playing BF 2, but since then, witn bad company and later bf titles everything went just wrong. Its like cod now for me, run and gun. I regret buying bf 4, it was the worst purchase i ever made.

I think market share shouldn't be it all. Linux (especially when Frostbite can do Vulkan) isn't more cost than they get back - when you just run the numbers.

But there are other points that do not show up in those reports: Helping an *independent* platform to grow.
Independency means: Independent from Microsoft on DX. EA was among the first to use Mantle - because of DX not doing the job well enough anymore. And why that? Because MS didn't need to fear other technologies.

I cannot understand: Do they want such a situation again? Do they still want that MS is able to dictate them how to program? What toolchains to use?

They should see their power to be able to drive independent.
This saves money. But maybe less than MS is able to pay them.

So Dragon Age an Mass Effect, still avoid Linux :(
ricki42 Sep 12, 2015
For EA games it's not just the engine, it's also Origin that would need to be ported.
Still, Mass Effect: Andromeda would've been nice.

Is it possible we have an article about somebody explaining very reasonably and directly why they won't be porting to Linux, without everybody trolling how they don't care about that dev's/publisher's games and they suck overall. I'd don't really like EA, but to say you don't care about whether Mass Effect, Battlefied, NFS, Dragon Age and FIFA series come to Linux is just laughable.
