Don't Count On Any EA Frostbite Powered Games On Linux

By -
Sad, but not unexpected news as the Technical Director on Frostbite at Electronic Arts has said seeing their games on Linux is unlikely.

@HeavyHDx very unlikely

— Johan Andersson (@repi) September 12, 2015

When asked why he had a simple answer:

@HeavyHDx less then 1% of the potential audience, even Mac (which we don't support) is more than 3x larger. http://t.co/o6DCeTCh4E

That's fine, and completely understandable. The only reason we are getting some bigger games right now is Aspyr, Feral and a few others are hoping on a good future with Steam Machines, so it's not unexpected for a huge company like EA to not do Linux right now.

It's a shame, as before a member of DICE said they strongly wanted to get into Linux, so I guess it never worked out for them.

It is yet another reason why I really hope Steam Machines get included in the Steam survey somehow, I mean Valve want to show the market share for it has grown after release right? I do wonder how they will do this. I haven't seen them talk about this anywhere, so we will have to wait and see. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I think there is no point in telling them what is the number of users or potential users since I'm quite sure EA has people responsible for both estimation of potential profits from porting to a platform, and people responsible for potential future profits. They have their own data which I'm sure is much more detailed and reliable than our own data. If they don't find it profitable they will not do it. They are a stock company -- they only care about well-being of their shareholders (so its not like valve, which has much more freedom in planning and development).
Although Mass Effect and Fifa are the two franchises I miss most on Linux ...

While no Frostbite games will be ported to Linux anytime soon, there's no reason for EA not publish any future Crysis games on Linux given the CryEngine engine has already been ported to Linux. So it's not all doom and gloom.

Quoting: ricki42For EA games it's not just the engine, it's also Origin that would need to be ported.
Still, Mass Effect: Andromeda would've been nice.

Yes of course, but use the Steam HWsurvey for a stament is poor.
Realy poor and nonsense, if you don't have Linux with steam 4 linux installed to see how much you get the survey.

Are you sure you replied to the right comment? I wasn't arguing against anything you were saying, I was merely pointing out that they would also need to port Origin to Linux, and then they'd have to convince Linux users to use it. I think acceptance of Origin has improved, it was quite hated originally (no pun intended), and I think if anything I would guess Linux users would be even more hesitant to install yet another DRM client.

As for the Steam surveys, I think it's important to beware of confirmation bias. I have read so often on Linux gaming forums that the survey pops up less often on Linux, everyone seems to just accept it, but I've never seen proper statistics. If I started steam on wine now and got the survey, I'd be tempted to see that as confirmation, but the plural of anecdote isn't data. And going by the data we have from devs who published their sales per platform, Linux usually comes out at 1-3%, which is actually fairly in line with the Steam survey, considering that the Linux community has fewer games to choose from and is probably on average more active than the millions of Windows users who logged in once.
But whether or not the Steam survey is biased, Valve must have access to more relevant data, such as money spend per platform (this one really seems the most important), games bought per platform, players logged in per platform. After all, they anyway determine what platform a sale is assigned to. And I'd be surprised if EA couldn't get that data, I highly doubt they base business decision solely on some potentially flawed and limited Steam hardware survey.

I seen some nice games of EA but at same time I don' t care, I dunno why for some reason EA doesn't bring a good feeling, to me looks like a company just care about the money and not passionate of doing games. Maybe I' m wrong but that is my feel so whatever EA do not interested. Even when I used windows I stop playing EA games like at 98 with FIFA.

Hounding the guy on twitter is not the answer, it's not going to change his mind and it will just (further) sour his opinion of the Linux community. Make your point once, then leave the guy the **** alone. This is EA we're talking about, they will change their stance on Linux if and when, AND ONLY IF AND WHEN, it becomes profitable for them to invest in Linux. No way EA will be one of the trailblazers. For me, it's no big loss as I've completely stopped buying anything from EA several years ago, for reasons completely unrelated to Linux. Still, they put out some big popular games that others would like to buy, so them supporting Linux would be nice, if it happens eventually.

I'm quite certain the people over at dice wants to do a linux game but the business people over at EA says no.

Quoting: MGOidThere is some things I want from EA, like the Crysis series and Mirror's Edge. But for most of you, THIS is why I want they showing up in Linux:

Like it or not, EA is a giant in this industry, and will be very difficult see most people moving from Windows without EA and Ubisoft at our side too.

Man, I teared up. I've never cried at an E3 showcase before.

EA was a pretty much solid company, around 2000-2005

I was very much into Sim City, up to 4, ...everything past that is truly garbage - not just due to their conditional always-online-to-play DRM.
Same with need 4 speed, the quality of these drops with every release, not to mention that new pretty much cool thinking that DLC makes big bucks. Just MS' Destiny is an even worse example on that.

So yes, there are a very few games worth considering, even those I'd like to have on my steambox and steam library, but EA does care that much about it as they care about their programmers, that even Forbes mentioned it - http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2013/04/09/ea-voted-worst-company-in-america-again/

Seriously EA, it is not that I do not understand business - I am a CEO as well, but at least in terms of SteamOS/Linux, I'd prepare my own company for a new platform, which is in many respects far superior than others, with Vulkan and stuff, so that I could provide games for more platforms - without vendor lock-in (say DX) and a likely good market share for SteamOS (+ private Linux installs). You decide, regardless of how much you care and think that every computer goes with windows.

Yes and i agree your statment.

But we must see the other side: EA use Stats in his statments.
The Guy from Frostbyte use the steam HWSurway in his statment.

And this is a reason, too why we don't get games from EA on Linux.

It's the 1% Stats Ghost, thats use this Companys as a reason why they don't port to linux.

But i see it on windows, too.

I have my steam account since 17. October 2013 and i got 2 surveys on the native linux
client, one on wine and one on Windows native.

So i got 4 surveys in 2 years.
Do you see the irony?

sad thing here being...

you want Linux support, yet your actions says you'd give money to them anyway since in reality you don't really care if game has Linux support or not.

your words speak one thing, your wallet another

not to mention, there is nothing nicer for Linux than some user playing wiser from person who actually matters. same kind of stupid as that last comment from petition for Blizzard
